18 years, 4 votes, $450 million dollars, 3 site changes and 2 design changes. All that and the Cards are STILL playing in a college stadium....
Atleast it's a local company.
UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX STADIUM!

Got up at 345am and I checked my email account and I get this email from AZCENTRAL.COM... They announce the naming rights to the stadium..
First of all I am still pissed about the 2 Divisional Losses in three games.
Then the quarterback issue which (Cardinals Bad Luck Mentality which I know I have tried to get rid off) will start Leinart instead of Warner. And Now the stadium will be called The University of Phoenix Stadium.... I rather call it Sun Devils Stadium - West.... Man embarrassment isnt the word to discribe my feelings for this week being a longtime fan of the Arizona Cardinals.
Its hard to have pride in a team being in the bay area with those **** Whiners and da Thuggish Raiders. So I am gonna get attacked on two fronts later on when I get to work...
And to top it all off I have to hear it from a Bengals fan (My Boss) and my girlfriend (Colts Fan).....
Man this sucks...

PHOENIX -- The NFL's Arizona Cardinals have a new $455 million football stadium to play in this season. And under a naming-rights deal, the retractable-dome facility in suburban Glendale will be rechristened University of Phoenix Stadium.
Financial details of the 20-year deal were expected to be disclosed at a news conference Tuesday outside the stadium.
Brian Mueller, president of Apollo Group Inc., the University of Phoenix's parent company, told The Arizona Republic that the naming-rights deal is the first sports-marketing venture for the Apollo Group and is part of a major new branding campaign for the school.
The for-profit University of Phoenix is the nation's largest private university with 250,000 students, most of them working adults. Its parent company had $2.3 billion in revenue last year, ranking it among Arizona's largest companies.
"We want to lend more credibility to the students who earn degrees from here," Mueller said.
The stadium also is the new home of the Fiesta Bowl, and in January, will host the first of the new national college championship games. It also will be the site of the 2008 Super Bowl.
Michael Bidwill, Cardinals team vice president and general counsel, said the team talked to a "number of different" local and national companies about a naming-rights deal for the stadium with its first priority local corporations.
Bidwill, son of team owner Bill Bidwill, said the Cardinals approached the University of Phoenix and he considers it a good match on several fronts.
"They're about technology and improving people's lives," Michael Bidwill said of the university. "It's a very good, wholesome product and we're proud to be associated with it."
Michael Bidwill said the naming-rights revenue is a "critical piece" of new stadiums.
In the NFL, naming-rights revenues are not subject to the league's revenue-sharing agreement and thus have become an even more valuable income stream for the teams involved.
Michael Bidwill said the Cardinals would use the money from the University of Phoenix deal, to be paid annually over the 20 years, to field a competitive team.
"That's what we're about is building a championship team," he said. "This revenue is a big piece of allowing the team to go out into free agency and to move forward."

Only the Cardinals organization could make such a godawfully bad decision.
You just spent 18 years :Censored: about being in a college stadium and now after WE pay for your new building you turn around and name the new stadium University of Phoenix?
How :Censored: clueless is this front office? Have you NO sense of situational awarness or PR savvy at all?!?!
It doesn't matter if they're the highest bidder you dopes!! You want to absolutely detach any hint of the losing stigma of the last 18 years and that means NOT giving your brand new, state of the art, taxpayer paid for dome a name that makes it sound like it belongs on the campus of some quintuple B community college campus!
WELCOME TO THE 2008 SUPER BOWL AT the university of Phoenix stadium.

Asked if he has any preferences for the inevitable acronyms for the 11-syllable new stadium name - the former Bank One Ballpark will forever be known by many Diamondbacks fans as BOB - Bidwill said, "It's going to be called University of Phoenix Stadium."

It will be nice when all this settles down. You think when St. Louis named theat stadium the Edward Jones Dome, that evryone had a party? Look around at some of the stadiums and arenas. I look at it as:
$7.7 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR STADIUM!!
I'll always look at it as Cardinals Stadium, so what does it frieking matter.

If there was someone with enough money out there and wanted it to be AmericaSucksAndTheCardinalsAreGarbage stadium, Bidwell would be more than happy to name it that. There is no integrity with this organization and there never has been. I love the cards because I was born and raised in AZ and we never had an expansion team here. I hope that Bidwell JR takes this team and organization and turns it around we the people deserve something to celebrate here in the desert
The name is really bad...
I'm tired of names changing but this one defiantly should.
Do you all remember Candle Stick and Giants stadium... I thought for once we had our own stadium that we paid for!!!
That 7 million dollars should get put back into the community sponsoring pop warner football and other sport related events through out the valley... Not to line the pockets of the already FAT CATS....
If not then give it back to the tax payers!!!!! This is utter NONSENSE
If this money does not get funneled back into the community we should raise hell.

Unless you rent cars or stay in local hotels, you ain't paying jack towards the stadium. Also, the bill that passed to build this stadium has built alot of youth sports fields already, with over 20 projects ongoing. The stadium provided 600+ jobs during it's construction and still supplies over 200+ full time jobs. I think plenty of money is being 'funneled' back into the community. Do you now want to talk about the BCS National Championship Game in '07, the Super Bowl in '08, and the NCAA Regional Basketball Tournament that's coming also and put pencil to paper and see how much money THOSE events will 'funnel' to our fair community??? How about the $400 million it already has??

So it is your opinion that the organization already does enough? That the money they make is theirs and they can do what they want with it right? I understand there are going to be big events in the future that will generate money for the community. Great!
I’m all for that I just know there are a lot of people making money hand over fist and I just think more can be done…

Enough for what? I'm not sure what you mean there. If you're concerned what they do with the money they make, well yes, it's theirs. They can do whatthey please. I used to own my own business and I was the best person at determining the things I improved or changed in that business. This team does a TON for the community. The Bidwills, the players, the cheerleaders, etc. As far as the stadium, maybe you didn't know this, but the Bidwills were required to secure a $125 million loan for their financial share of the stadium debt. To my knowledge, they've laid down about $145M. This stadium does NOT belong to the Bidwills. Not any part of it as far as I know, but they were required to foot a good portion of the bill, (almost 1/3) and I think that's fine. They have invested much more money into that place than that. I had to go there for something other than a game and I noticed some new things around the stadium. The person I was with that works there mentioned the Bidwills keep adding finishing touches to the stadium (player pictures, banners of ex-players, etc.) to accent what's there, and that is done at their expense. I know here we focus alot on wins/losses, that's what we do, it's what we want. But to think they 'sit' on a pile of money, I disagree. I too want to see them invest the money they make from finally having their own stadium into the product on the field. I expect it. I've been a STH since day 1. They said they'd do it, and I believe they will....

Please pay attention. I am and always have been for the stadium and I was among those that worked on building it. The topic here was the NAME CHANGE to the staduim I was just saying that it shouldn't be changed it was nice when the anouncers said welcome to CARDINALS STADUIM! nice ring to it and wish it would have stayed that way thats all.

I am sure they made thier money back and if not will do so... I am not against a good business investment and thats what they did. I guess I am just thinking that it sure would be nice if the City/State and fans owned the team like Packer fans that there would be a deeper tie to AZ for this franchise... I still wish we would get our own expansion team... but thats just me and I will support the home town team regardless.
