DENVER -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.
A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department.
Sounds like someone had an automatic machine gun .. what a way to go .. terrible news for Denver and tragedy for this young man ..

I hope the motive had nothing to do with the loss...that would make it even more tragic.

I don't know, but if that is the case, then them Broncos fans are complete and utter idiots.
Their criminal insanity would make us inane Eagles fans look like St. Jude and Orthodox.
I hope the Williams family is doing the best they are able to do with this tragedy and that this ******* gets what he deserves.
RIP Darrent Williams.

A young athlete actually has the smarts to take a limo and still gets dusted... What a shame...

Sad, sad day for us Bronco fans.
He said this before he was killed.
"Cornerback Darrent Williams said he will wait about a month to see if his shoulder needs to be surgically repaired. He was was hurt in the second half of Sunday's game and did not return."

Biography of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams
Broncos' player Darrent Williams is killed in shooting. 9NEWS Monday morning. January 1, 2007.
According to Denver Police, Williams was killed in an early morning shooting after someone with a gun pulled up alongside the white Hummer stretch limousine he and wide receiver Javon Walker were riding in and fired multiple shots.
Police say 16 people were in the stretched Hummer at the time of the shooting, including Williams and Walker. Authorities say Walker was not shot.
Police say the shooting happened near 11th Street and Speer Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. on Monday.
Some of the streets in the area were shut down during the investigation.
Authorities say they are searching for a white GM model car, either a Suburban or a Tahoe with dark tinted windows. Anyone with any information regarding the incident should call Denver Police.
Three people were shot and police say the limo was sprayed with bullets. At the scene, 9NEWS could see what appeared to be ten bullet holes in the limo.
Police say the three were taken to area hospitals where Williams was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the other two victims who were shot suffered minor injuries. Their names were not immediately released.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano says he spoke with Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization after police told him of the incident.
"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.
Saccomano says police called him at around 3 a.m.
Police say the group was coming from Club Safari where an altercation occurred, however police say they cannot link the altercation with the shooting.
Authorities say they believe the shooting was a drive-by, and that the shooter or shooters did not know who was in the vehicle. Police say the shots were fired with a semi-automatic weapon.
Police say they are still searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses.
"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."
Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.
Williams played in the first half of the game but sat out the second half with a shoulder injury.
However, during the game he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks. He also returned two punts for 50 yards.
Williams, a second-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State, started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and had 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

That's really sad. I get to watch a lot of Denver games due to family and good friends, and I have to say that Williams was a joy to watch. He was charismatic, always smiling, and full of enthusiasm. Denver lost a good guy last night. My condolences to his teammates, friends, and family.
Tragic, the guys were doing the right thing too... Had a driver because they knew they were going to be out on the town.
Very sad. Football really is just a game!

I was hearing today that Williams might have been a Crip but reading an article the Denver Post re-ran on their website he said that he hung around some Crip members growing up but didn't consider himself a gang member. I hate to step on a guy who's just been killed but this kind of shooting usually has gang written all over it. I hope this isn't the case and whoever did it should be punished accordingly. http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_4753155

The Denver police will be searching for a mid-20s black male driving a 2000-2005 white Tahoe or Surburban...needle in a haystack.

I think you meant, HAVE to watch
Like someone else said, the saddest part to me is that he actually had the intelligence to not drink and drive and rolls in a limo, and from reports I've heard he sounded like good guy. Meanwhile, there are guys like Leonard Little killing people driving and he's still around to play football.
I look forward to the perps getting caught and brought to justice at some point...
I hope the motive had nothing to do with the loss...that would make it even more tragic.
From the Denver Post:
An argument before the killing of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams could have been sparked by trash talking over the team's New Year's Eve defeat, an attempt to steal the young athlete's jewelry or the flashing of gang signs, according to witnesses, family members and sources close to the team.

Now that's idiotic..."you lost the game, so i shoot you; there, now you'll learn your lesson!"
I don't buy the jewelry theft angle, since he was supposedly in the limo and a vehicle drove up alongside to shoot at them.
Flashing gang signs? you never know...maybe he was just calling a play.

Go over to www.kusa.com and go to the following link. On the left hand side there's video of Shanahan's press conference. This is a man who has lost a member of his family. Regardless of the circumstances, this was a guy who loved his kids, and wanted to help young people. Tragic, Tragic story!

You can also go over to the Denver Broncos message board (http://forums.denverbroncos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=42)and leave a breif message. This is a tragedy for the entire NFL and not just the Denver Broncos. Imagine if it was one of our shining stars. Darrent Williams was drafted in the second round behind Antrel Rolle at the same position. Life is too short and in the daily injury report, this just proves we are all listed as "DAY to DAY".

I know it's not a popular theme here, but Denver is my favorite AFC team, and Darrent Williams was one of the players I really liked.
I left a message on their forum, and encourage others to do the same rather you're a bronco fan or not. Anytime violence like this claims the life of a young star, it's a hit to us all. It could happen to anyone.
R.I.P Darrent. You will be missed.

They found the SUV involved in the shooting. It had hastily been painted black to disguise it. They removed the rear license plate, but did not remove the front plate. It's now in police custody. It's registered to a known crips gang member in Denver whose currently in jail. One of the passengers in the the car was donning a LOT of red and possibly started the argument outside the nightclub. Kenyon Martin (whose B-day party was being held for at the Club they were at), also seems to have some gang ties. An incident happened at the Nuggets game the other night (after the shooting) where some of Kenyons homeys confronted a front row fan who was allegedly heckling Martin.
During the third-quarter, a fan sitting two rows behind Martin yelled at him, "Suit up, you chump." All accounts indicate that the fan did not use any profanities. At that point, Martin is said to have stood up, pointed at the heckler, and then motioned to one of his friends to go confront the heckling fan. His friend then stood up and yelled at the heckler, "Shut your mouth before we take you outside and beat [you up]." He also apparently screamed at a Nuggets fan named Don Miller--who, along with his teenage son, happened to be sitting next to the heckler--calling him a "fat (expletive) white boy."
The rest of the story becomes unclear, but apparently more heated words were exchanged, and Martin's friend began to approach the heckler in a threatening manner before being restrained. Another report posits that, after the game, Martin and two friends sought out both the heckler and Miller in order to "shut them up":
"Kenyon Martin walks back out of the locker room, and he's with a guy in a Yankees hat and another guy, and he says, 'Ya'll just need to shut up.' He says, 'This guy called me a punk,' pointing to the [heckler]," Don Miller, an eye-witness, said.
"I say, 'Mr. Martin, he didn't call you a punk, he called you a chump.' He said, 'You, shut up.' "
No violence occurred, but fans sitting near-by were worried that violence was about to erupt. The NBA is investigating the incident and, as of tonight, no police report has been filed. If any of this true, you can be sure that Kenyon Martin is looking at an enormous suspension, and, less likely, criminal assault charges and civil liability for assault.
But what has Kenyon Martin had to say about the incident? Well . . .
"I know the person, but I didn't direct nobody to go into the stands. I was watching the game."
Hmm. "I didn't direct nobody." Aside from a less than convincing defense--he acknowledges knowing the guy who verbally assaulted the fan--Martin's "commentary" seems to suggest that English 101 wasn't an integral part of his criminal justice curriculum.
