I prefer the animated but pausing kind. I've got a whole slew of new Triple-T animated avatars I made on my Mac from the original Reebok Terrible Terry Tate: Office Linebacker commercials.

For those interested in the process:

1. Open Triple T commercial video in Quicktime Player.

2. Export as image sequence (this does the whole file - I use 12 FPS or 15 FPS).

3. Open folder of images in GraphicConverter to view thumbnails in a Browser - this makes it easy to figure out start and end images.

4. Copy small portion of image sequence (to be the actual animation) to another folder. GraphicConverter allows drag-and-drop into a Finder window, making this easy.

5. Copy images between end images, then rename new duplicate images in reverse order to continue image sequence in an "out and back" loop. For example: Image1 through Image5, then duplicate Image2 through Image4, and rename Image4 Copy as Image6, Image3 Copy as Image7, etc.

6. Import folder of smaller image sequence as frames into Adobe ImageReady.

7. Add pauses to frames as required.

8. Resize to 80 pixes high.

9. Export as optimized GIF.

10. Yee howdy!

The longest part of this process for me was figuring out which sequence of images to use. Pretty darn simple - certainly not to the complexity of something Fiasco or DUSK884 come up with on a regular basis.

As per usual I will be rotating avatars often, and there is even an annoying mime version sure to entertain several of the regular posters.
