The Minnesota Vikings made a trio of roster moves on Thursday, the biggest which was to release veteran cornerback Fred Smoot.

The Vikings also released two other veterans - tackle Mike Rosenthal and tight end Jermaine Wiggins.

Smoot, who turns 28 on April 17, played two seasons with the Vikings after signing a six-year, $30 million contract in March 2005.

Smoot played in 14 games last season, registering 61 tackles with an interception.

2001 WAS 30 5
2002 WAS 49 4
2003 WAS 49 4
2004 WAS 55 3
2005 MIN 37 2
2006 MIN 59 1

Totals 279 tackles -19 INTs-62-PD (PD= pass deflections)

His role in the Love Boat fiasco fueled his demise in Minny, and his inability to convert successfully Tampa Two defense caused him to slip behind Cedric Griffin, a second-round pick in 2006. Because Smoot received a large roster bonus when he was signed, there will be no cap hit. He was scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.7 million in 2007.

Thanks for the link JimHArt.

I think Smoot is an undersise CB at 178 lb with speed. He has probably lost some of his great speed after 6 years in NFL.

But the LOVE boat event and 2006 car crash last year where he broke his jaw really affected his career in Minnesota. He has trouble with playing cover 2 because he has trouble jamming the big receivers at the line and coming up for run support.

Interceptions have dropped from 4-5 per season to 1-2 now.

Well said. I hope the Cards stay far, far away from this guy.
