Read on my phone yesterday where the DBacks are talking to the Yankees about a deal to return the unit back to Arizona. Apparently the deal would be Johnson to the DBacks in return for 3 or 4 players, with at least one player at the major league level. The rest of the players would be minor leaguers.
The DBacks are requesting a 72 hour window to negotiate an extension to the unit's contract and feel confindent that they can come to an agreement with him as he has indicated that if he is traded he wanted to be close to home.
It was also reported that the San Diego Padres are interested also.

Yanks taking Randy offers
December 26
New York Daily News: "Randy Johnson's rocky stay in New York may be ending after two seasons. San Diego right now appears to be the most likely destination for the five-time Cy Young Award winner, but the Dodgers, Angels and Diamondbacks are all said to be in the mix. "

Yankees Explore a Trade to Send Johnson Home
December 26
New York Times (registration required): "That is because the Yankees appear open to the idea of trading Johnson, perhaps to the Arizona Diamondbacks, for whom Johnson pitched for six seasons... The Yankees have also spoken to the San Diego Padres and a third team, believed to be the San Francisco Giants, according to a baseball executive who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about a possible deal."
Let him stay in NYC.. He's washed up.. He shoulda stayed here to begin with.. Screw him..

Seriously, at this point I take this news as a ploy by the new ownership to sell more season TIX. RJ, although I'll forever be thankfull to him for '01 is not the same anymore, I really don't think he has much left. The Yanks are SOOO interested in out prospects that we should keep them.

Randy has already proven that he's losing his ability. His slider is no good anymore. He's fading fast...the last thing we need here is another Emmitt Smith to sell tickets and lose games with. I'd rather give a rookie a chance than another has-been (El Duque, Ortiz, etc.) RJ will be in the HOF, and maybe as a D-back, but it's time to let go of pipe dreams and move on. We're still paying him anyway, I'd rather pay him to lose for the Yanks than for us...

wow, thanks for the update BCF. Good job. I wouldnt count the Unit out of it abilitywise by any means as he seems like the kind of guy that will work to no end to get his old form back. There have been many pitchers who have pitched quite well at his age and Im sure he will put forth the effort. Also, Im sure he will bring some excitement back to the team, will sell tickets and will get people talking about the DBacks which are all good things IMO......

He is the one who took Brandon Webb under his wing and helped him. Randy Johnson and Brandon Webb as our 1-2 punch? This is going to be great! Pitching is what this team needs anyways other than Brandon Webb.

Good point Drachir, I forgot about all of the possibilities of having RJ work with our younger pitchers and maybe doing for them what he did for BW!!

I don't want him in NYC and don't want him here!! He's a *****... Teams add by his subtraction...
And, he's done anyway... Old man with a bad back - not good for a starting Major League Pitcher...

Agree... Maybe as a 5th starter but not as one of the primary pitchers on the team... He doesn't have much left.

And, he's done anyway... Old man with a bad back - not good for a starting Major League Pitcher...He is far from being done. Just because he hasn't won the Cy Young in a few years doesn't mean he is done. He still won 17 games the last 2 years and threw for 383 strikeouts the past 2 years. If he gets hitting than he will be just fine because you aren't going to win many games against Randy Johnson when the team score 2 or more runs.
He would be a great asset to the Diamondbacks again. Sure he isn't the friendliest guy away from the field, and he will always be known for shoving the camera out of his face from the Papparazzi when he first arrived in New York but NO one can question his on the field pressence.

Drachir - are you high??? He won 17 games last year with a 5.00 ERA!!!! "If he gets hitting"??? You can't get anymore hitting than the Yanks gave him last season. The only possible basis you can use for him being "successful" with the D'backs would be that the NL West (heck, the NL as a whole) is nothing more than AAA quality...

Big wish: Yankees, D'Backs near Johnson trade
December 30

Maybe Im just a kool aid drinker, but I see us getting RJ as a real positive. I think it will bring excitement, optimism, emotion, focus and respect to the team. Just having him around I think will make the pitching staff that much better because the guy works his tail off. Also, I think the other members of the staff will be compelled to work harder because the guy just reeks of intensity, competitiveness and sense of urgency. One thing I remember about the Unit when he was here was his burning desire to win. When he pitched poorly he was miserable. The fear of failure can motivate many, and I think its very applicable here. I honestly think everyone on the team will have additional motivation to do better just because hes here and they will consciously or subconsciously want to do better as to not let him or the team down. Thats what we need. I can guarantee this......if the team is losing you wont see the Unit laughing, sitting back with a laid back attitude just going through the motions like you see with a lot of ball players these days. The guy will be churning inside and be just flat miserable. Thats what we need. Thats what any team needs, more heart and passion for what theyre doing.
I realize the guy can be a jerk sometimes, but he more than makes up for it with all of the positives he brings. I might be in the minority, but I say....BRING ON THE UNIT!!! My prediction is if the Unit comes here again, we will see him and the team more successful than if he went somewhere else!

Just heard on ESPN radio that the only sticking point to the deal now is that the DBacks want to pay a little less of RJs contract in leiu of giving them better prospects while the Yankees are wanting them to pay more of his contract and will take a bit less in prospects......

Arby - he won 17 games last season with a 5.00 ERA. How many runs per game will the D'backs provide Johnson?? If can be halfway objective, you would admit that this number would minimally be half of what the Yanks gave him last season.
Coupled with his advanced age and constant health issues, along with a bullpen that pales in comparison to the Yankees, RJ woud be lucky to squeak out 10 wins with the D-Backs... And I won't even get into the poor chemistry issue and the downer of a presence he is in the clubhouse...
This is a STUPID and potentially costly move for the D-Backs. As much as I want him out of da Bronx, I would hate to see the D-Backs get suckered into this move...

I see your point buddy, but disagree. I dont think you can judge someone by one season. I think he'll be more comfortable back home in Arizona and believe that he will work incredibly hard to overcome any physical ailments. Hes done it before and I think he can do it again.
10 wins? Come on 82, I say he wins at least 15! (golf ball bet maybe???).
I dont think hes a downer. I think hes intense, a competitor, has the fire. I like that in a player. Hey, if hes a bit too serious, thats ok. That will offset a lot of guys that think things are a big joke and just cash their paychecks.
I like the move, IF it happens. We'll have to wait to see who is right my man.
By the way, take it easy on the Senior Circut......I believe a mediocre team from there beat the best in the AL in the World Series didnt they???

RJ is borderline cancerous in the clubhouse... He in the antithesis of a team player.
As for the over/under on his win total should the D-backs actually pull the trigger on this move. I'll say 12 wins. If he goes over, you got yourself a box of your favorite golf balls!
And yes, the Cards beat a run-down and out of gas Tiger team. As we all know, anything can happen in a 7 game series... But nobody can argue that over the course of a full season, the NL was pathetic at best...

I would like to see the Big Unit back in Arizona, even if it is only to retire as a D-Back.Go to the HOF as a D-Back.He gave us his all in 01 to win the World Series. If he can win even 12-15 games for us i would be happy with that.I have read more that once that little kids love Randy Johnson. If that is true,he cannot be a mean person,or the kids would know it.

Ok my man, one dozen balls to the winner. If the Unit goes under 12 you win, if he goes over 12 I win and if its right on 12 we call it a push and I'll admit youre a heck of a linesmaker!!!
Should be fun to see what happens. Remember its only a bet if he is a DBack ok? Good luck 82CG.

Just heard the new this morning! I don't normally get into a celeb having a baby, but I have to admit, I am really interested to see Tiger as a dad. Of course, the entire world will be watching this kid(girl or boy) closely to examine the impact of genetics... Should be interesting and of course, I am very happy for Tiger and his bride... Ditto... 3 in a row, and in all-time heroic fashion...
I was also watching the Golf Channel last night and they replayed the 2000 PGA Championship. I had forgotten just how amazing the level of play was between Tiger and Bob May. May shot 3 consecutive 66's and still not able to defeat Tiger... That has to be one of the greatest two-man showdowns in Major history.

Great stuff on the Golf Channel. I watched the US Open Highlights last night when Tiger won at Pebble. What an amazing show of talent. He blistered the field when no one else could scare par! Just listening to the announcers in awe of him was in and of itself a real treat!

Well, it looks like at least a few other people besides myself and a few others on this board have jumped on the Randy Johnson bandwagon. Just heard Doug Franz and Ron Wolfley endorse the signing and both feel it will be a huge addition for the club.
Also, heard Bob Melvin and he sited the same rationale as mentioned on this thread for why he is very excited about this move. Work ethic, presence, etc. and how it will rub off on most everyone else.

So let me get this straight............ They go out of their way to sign the Randy ( I don't like the Diamondbacks) Johnson..back problems and all, and didn't try to sign Gonzo who wanted to play and finish out his carreer as a diamondback? That doesn't make any sense.
Ron Wolfley needs to stick to football .... endorsing Johnson basically is a slap against the true Diamondbacks fans ...good luck selling more tickets....after Gonzo left I just heard a big thud on ticket sells.
Projekt

^ The difference between Gonzo and Johnson is that Gonzo can be very easily replaced by a minor leaguer and you would see no loss in production... production would likely increase.
With RJ, we have a pitcher who can still help our team. He is no Ace anymore, but slot him in our rotation at 3 or 4 and he looks pretty good. He will benifit from playing against the easier lineups of the NL, and a less pressured environment.

The main reason they let Gonzo go is that he is worthless when he is not on the juice, he has played terrible since getting off steroids and he is lucky the D-Backs do not go public with what they know about the cheater.

The DBacks will sign RJ if and only if he passes a physical. If the back is that bad, he will not pass. Also, RJ will be the number 3 pitcher on the team which means the DBacks will probably have the best number 3 starter in baseball or at least one of the best. I would venture to say hes at least in the top 60 or so pitchers in the game. Besides, who would be our number 3 or 4 starter if we dont have the Unit? Some rookie or hack probably.
As far as ticket sales go, I see the exact opposite as you predict. I see them selling a lot when the Unit pitches and thats a good thing.....

Deep down I hope you are right Arby.... there wasn't a huge ticket demand when he pitched for us the last time and we had a better team in place. It would be nice for the diamondbacks to play above .500 ball . That would help put fans back in the stands.
I 'am leary about bringing someone back who didn't leave on the best of terms with the team last time. I predict millions of dollars sitting on the injured reserve list with a bad back when that money could have been better utilized . We haven't been the most frugal team recently when it comes to spending money ie; Russ Ortiz ..... I think we still owe over 40 million to Randy in deferred payments hmmmmmmm

I thought all week what a horrible trade for the D'backs. But now I have changed and feel like we gave up 3 players that probably wouldn't have ever played for us anyway and a cheap reliever we don't need.
So, basicly we get a starting pitcher for big salary, but don't lose any players we will ever miss. IF he is healthy and can get up to 10-12 wins, then that is just as good as going out and paying some other high priced 3rd or 4th rotation pitcher.
I think it is too much to pay for him at this age, and he sure stunk up the mound last year, but that's the d'backs front office problem to figure out how to make up the money.

I can understand your concern RCrds4real. Definitely a legitimate one for sure. I think Randy will draw fans, but you are right, winning will draw more than anything. I happen to think he will win 12-14 games for us and will have success this year. I think he is more comfortable in the National League, knows the batters better and will return to the form he had in 2005 vs. 2006, although he did win 17 games for the Yankees last year. Everyone brings up the fact that he had a 5 ERA, but he pitched good enough to win. Sometimes when pitchers pitch for teams that score a lot of runs they pitch a little differently than if the team scored only a few each game. If you look at Randy's run support the last year he was here it was very poor but his ERA was lower too. I believe his ERA here will be somewhere in the 3s instead of the 5s. Just my opinion.
I know he didnt leave here on the best of terms but sometimes players dont realize how good something was until they go somewhere else. Then they appreciate what they had before and return with a better mind set.
I think he upgrades a lot of aspects of the team. Pitching, mental toughness, competitiveness, accountability, concientiousness, and willingness to win. The one thing Ive always liked about the Unit is that he hates to lose, it absolutely kills the guy. With players like that it cant help but turn up the intensity of the team. I for one, hate when I see fans agonizing over a loss and some of the players are just sitting there laughing, yawning or looking at their watch just waiting to get out of there. You get the feeling like if they dont care why should we. I never get that feeling with Randy Johnson.
We'll see what happens. If RJ goes 6-10 or something and has a high ERA or gets hurt early, then I will have to eat crow, but i think hes going to make a big difference for us and give us a better shot at the NL West crown......

It's official.
Randy Johnson has agreed to a $26 million, two-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Johnson most likely will take his physical Monday, and the trade probably will be finalized Tuesday.
Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes confirmed the agreement but otherwise declined comment until after the medical information is reviewed.
New York -- which acquired the Big Unit from Arizona two years ago -- would receive reliever Luis Vizcaino, minor league right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and minor league shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.
Johnson was owed $16 million this year in the final season of his January 2005 contract with the Yankees.
The deal called for $1.5 million to be deferred without interest until 2010.
A baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations says Johnson's new deal calls for a $12 (M) million signing bonus, of which $3-point-5 (M) million is payable this year. He'll also get $500,000 in 2008 and $4 million each in 2009 and 2010.
Johnson gets salaries of $4 (M) million this year and $10 million in 2008.

I will always love the Big Unit, but letting Gonzo go because they wanted to get younger and then bringing RandyJohnson back, was a dumb move.

The Big Unit goes 6 innings and allows only 2 runs in his last start!
Much better Randy......

wow, I was following the game on my cell phone and Randy was looking GREAT early!! Strikes out the first six batters!!
He had a shut out going thru 6 innings and I thought it was all over at that point.
Then, I refresh my phone and see the score 9-3 Phillies? What in the heck happened?
They took the Big Unit out with the bases loaded and the next guy up jerks one and its 4-3 and the rest is history.
Man, my bet with 82CardsGrad is looking pretty bad right now. I need 12 wins out of Randy to win a dozen golf balls, and to date he has ZERO!!
82 has already picked out the balls im going to buy him!!
Oh well, at least hes looking better. Maybe there is still hope?

The Big Unit is making his move!!!!
PITTSBURGH (Associated Press) -- Try telling the Pittsburgh Pirates that Randy Johnson is 43 years old. Johnson, rounding into shape following offseason back surgery, struck out 10 in 5 2-3 innings to win his second start in a row and pitch the Diamondbacks to a 5-2 victory over the Pirates on Sunday.
Johnson (2-2), often resembling the dominating pitcher he was while winning five Cy Young Awards, was lifted after throwing 102 pitches. He gave up two runs and seven hits. He has struck out 19 in 11 2-3 innings over his last two starts, fanning the Pirates' No. 3-6 hitters a combined seven times. Jason Bay struck out three times and Ryan Doumit and Adam LaRoche twice each.
By beating the Rockies and Pirates in his last two starts, Johnson has 282 career victories _ leaving him one short of tying Jim Kaat for 29th place on baseball's career list and 18 short of No. 300.

Well, no win for The Unit, but he pitched well! 8 Ks in 6 innings and only 2 ERs.
He went into 2nd place on the all time strike out list and the DBacks won again so not a bad night!!!
