It truly amazes me that after all of these games, and our corners gettting beat, that Pendergast would play our corners closer to the line of scrimmage. Today was a perfect example. The chargers receivers were nabbing 10-12 yard catches all day. By time they reach us they have the ball in hand already. The only positive about our defense is stopping the run. Props to our run defense all season. They have done a great job for the most part. Clancy, can I help you pack?

Our D held their O to 20 points... and had we taken the three at the end of the first half our O would have had 23. The muffed punt was the key play of the game. Clancy's "D" is just a few pieces away from being dominant.

Clancy's D is one CB and a decision to move the CBs closer to the line from being dominant
edit: I think the implementation of Francisco @ FS will help tremendously

The defense finally showed they can take SOMETHING away if they try to do it...no TDs for LT, and pretty much kept him and Turner in check until the last drive.
Now can they shore up the passing game? That's a good one...next season we will get folks back from injury and see who joins the crew.

How about putting some blame on Richard Soloman who is supposed to be teaching these young DBs how to play .. I don't think they are getting the best coaching to start with ..

And what flavor of Kool Aide are you drinking?
Rushes 33 Yardage 169 Average 5.1 TDs 0 Longest run 43
The Cards didn't keep anything "in check." I don't know a team out there that wouldn't take a 5.1 yard per carry average and not think they were going to win. No TDs? Well, when Gates and company are pretty much untouched in coverage, the shortest distance between two points remains a straight line. Rivers, even on one leg, has proven that he can negotiate a straight line more often than not. The Chargers, after all, are about winning games, not getting LT TD records, although that has been a happy side effect of this year's offensive effort. Yes LT "only" had 66 yards on 16 carries; a 4.1 average. But everyone who has watched San Diego and LT over the years knows that this is his MO. He three and four yards you to sleep until he rips off that 60 yarder to put the knife in your collective hearts. The fact that he didn't yesterday had everything to do with the Chargers taking him out early in the 3rd quarter with a 20 point lead and a gimpy leg and nothing to do with the Cards keeping he or his backfield mates "in check." Heck, Turner's average was 5.3 yards all by himself, and Neal's 43 yard run was his longest in 12 years. Real fine defensive definition for "in check" there partner. And as for "until the last drive," hellloooooooo, that is precisely when you need to stop them to get the ball back so that Warner can work the two minute drill, and the Cards couldn't do it. When the better team needed to put it away once and for all they just sacked up and ran it right up the gut and there wasn't a darn thing the Cards could do to stop it.
Now having said all that, and not being a Card fan (although I live here and would very much like to be if they ever gave me a reason), there are players here who can play and I think Pendergast can probably coach. Get them all on the same page and with one or two additions, you might have a pretty fine defense.

The zero TDs stat is what I meant by keeping them in check...SD will get their yards, but keeping their RBs out of the end zone was a "moral victory". If you want to blow me out of the water for saying it, OK...doesn't mean very much when you think about the quality of the opponent AZ played.
And I mentioned that they needed to shore up the pass defense already...I've been railing on this defense the entire season, so none of Sunday's events surprised me.
