Custom Avatars... I'll make 'em for you

Thanks to moderator SEZ we can now have animated "avatars". I'd be happy to make one for the regulars here. I would like each one to be somehow Cardinals related so this privelege doesn't get taken away. The limit on filesize is 300kb but I'm going to do my best to keep each one under 100kb for the time being.

If you'd like one, send me a PM or post here and I'll get to work on them. Just tell me colors, any text you want, whatever you have for an idea. If you can post a picture you want as a base image (or two), please do so.

if you want to get into it and have a copy of Photoshop (which comes with ImageReady)... that's really all you need. There's a million google'able tutorials on how to start photoshopping. Same with Imageready.

I have about 3 avatars in the making and 2 revisions... it should be Friday night when I'm done with them since my laptop just went T.U. and I haven't had the chance to rebuild yet.

ImageReady is quite useful for animating GIFs. I explain my process for animation in another post - but I kind of cheat because my source material is video commercials of Terrible Terry Tate and thus extremely easy to animate.

What I really wish we could have is signature banners, but that luxury died long ago on the old board.

with a year of Photoshop under your belt, you are ready for animation. The best way to learn (for free) is to hit Google and type in "ImageReady tutorials" and go nuts. ImageReady is a program that they give you for free with Photoshop. With 2 or 3 tutorials complete, you'll be making avatars in no time.

I need help.....

I've been trying to get the Cardinal to slide from the left sid of the text to the right side. I want the head to appear inside the text........I can't seem to get it to work.

My main problem when I push tween between the bird positions....instead of showing the bg and text with bird through, it shows a transparent bg with the sqr. bird layer by itself sliding across???

What should I do?

after you hit the Tween button... make sure all the checkboxes are checked... I *think* this is your problem. You're not tweening all layers.

I'm not 100% on what you're looking for, do you want the cardinal head to only appear inside the text?

If so... select the layer with the text. Then go to LAYERS.... Rasterize > Layers. Then hit SELECT > Load Selection. Now you have the text selected and then paste your bird into the selection. This is one way.

Or, do the same as above and paste the bird head UNDER the text layer which will allow you to move it around in ImageReady.

I suggest making all changes to the layers with Photoshop... doing only the animation in ImageReady (then again, I'm still a noob with it as well)

most are not animated avatars... if they are, you may have to click on the image to see it (for the time being) and then use that image for your new Avatar (assuming that you want the animated version)

For example, if you click on the "actually its a bird" avatar above.. you'll see that it's animated. The animated one is the one you would right click, hit PROPERTIES and copy the address then paste into your avatar profile edit.

If you find one you like and want to use.... follow these steps if you are having issues:

click on the image you want.

Save it to your pc.

THEN go to "User CP" and edit your avatar info by Browsing to the file on your pc rather than the URL.

You can do that... have your text selected in the layer (the marching ants) by SELECT>LOAD SELECTION

then PASTE INTO.... Then open Imageready and use the timeline to slide it from side to side via TWEEN and adjust the layer position within the timeline.

I was afraid this could happen... sorry. I have been trying to keep file sizes down. The new allowed avatar size is 300kb but most of mine are 100k and under. On a regular cable or dsl connection, it shouldn't be more than a nanosecond to load... and once they are loaded, they'll be in the browser cache until cleaned out (which could be never if you're a regular here).

Our limits on filesizes and limits are more strict than most of the other team forums (that have real traffic since many teams don't have "official" boards.). The seahawks.net and official Bucs boards will take three times longer to load than ours do.

Again, I'll be doing my best to keep you happy and others. I was just tired of seeing pretty much the same 3 avatars for all users.

Strangely no. If I save the base work .psd file they become huge sometimes but the final gifs are usually really small. The "breasted" lady is actually some gif I saved from the seahawks.net forum that someone was using while I was there claiming my bet from a hawks fan that came here earlier.

I mentioned this as a potential problem for non broadband users previously. I do appreciatte that you try to minimize the size of your files and don't use the full 300kb. When you are teaching others how to do the animated gif's I hope you will pass on the importance of filesize and the techniques for compression to minimize it.

I forgot to mention (for those learning ImageReady):

To compact in ImageReady, always save as "Save Optimized as..."

Another tip is to only tween the layers you are actually changing in the frames RATHER than all the layers so that there is less info in the final file. You can often get a file cut in half this way.

Yep! In fact I'll give it a shot later.

You can learn to do it as can anyone else really. All you need is:

Adobe Photoshop

There is no substitute. Good news for you is that the program is much better on a Mac than a PC (which I'm using).

I'm using Photoshop CS. The newest is CS2 I believe. Any version Photoshop 5 and up works exactly the same so it's no problem whatever version you have.

You don't really do any animation in Photoshop itself... all you do is create your images in Photoshop using a different "layer" for each idea if you will. Then, you click the bottom toolbar button which will open up a program that comes free with Photoshop, Imageready.

Imageready then lets you manipulate each layer for animation.

Best way to learn is to hit google.com and just type in "Photoshop tutorials" and "Imageready tutorials". You can literally make your own animated gifs within minutes of never having made anything online ever. Kinda neat, I think.

Sounds more like the upgrade cost from CS rather than the full install.

If you have CS2 stay with it but if you don't go for CS3. There is some difference but does it warrent the new price? Download a trial from Adobe and compare them.

I never use the "new" tools in CS ... in fact everything I do can be done with PS6 (3+ versions ago or so lol)

There is no need to change if it works. But sometimes you have no choice but upgrade. Did you give the Manage Attachments a try?

1- right click the image you want to be your avatar (if it's shown here as an attachment, left click it first then)

2- save the image somewhere on your hard drive and remember where it is

3 - click on User CP in the black bar near the top of this screen. It's up and left, next to "FAQ".

4- you'll see a menu column on the left, click on "Edit Avatar".

5- Scroll down to Option 2 and then click BROWSE.

6- Find your saved image (avatar) and double click it.

7 - click Save Changes and you should be finished.
