Falcons hire Louisville's Petrino as coach ...

NFL.com wire reports

ATLANTA (Jan. 7, 2007) -- Louisville coach Bobby Petrino agreed Sunday to become the new coach of the Atlanta Falcons, moving to the NFL less than a week after Jim Mora's firing.

Kenny Klein, the sports information director at Louisville, said Petrino was leaving for Atlanta after guiding the Cardinals to a 12-1 season, capped by a 24-13 victory over Wake Forest on Tuesday night in the Orange Bowl.

Petrino met with his Louisville players Sunday night to let them know he was going to Atlanta. The Falcons planned a formal announcement Monday.

Petrino had a 41-9 record in four years at Louisville, leading the school to the Big East title and its first Bowl Championship Series victory in the Orange. He had just completed the first year of a 10-year, $25 million contract.

The Falcons moved quickly to replace Mora, who was fired just two years after leading Atlanta to the NFC Championship Game. The Falcons missed the playoffs the past two years, going 7-9 this season.

Petrino's previous NFL experience includes three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including two seasons as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in 2001. He then moved back to the college ranks, taking over as Auburn's offensive coordinator in 2002 before heading to Louisville.

"Nobody thought this would happen, but nobody's complaining about it," Cardinals defensive lineman Earl Heyman said. "You can't fault him considering what he's done for this program."

Petrino led the Cardinals to the Conference USA title in 2004, their final year in that league. Louisville claimed its first BCS appearance this season by winning the Big East.

Petrino's name repeatedly came up for other coaching vacancies, including an embarrassing episode in which Auburn set up a clandestine interview while Tommy Tuberville was still the Tigers' coach.

Louisville twice renegotiated Petrino's contract, giving him hefty raises in hopes of keeping him.

The Falcons spent the past several days interviewing NFL assistants, including Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary.

But owner Arthur Blank, who was aided in the search by general manager Rich McKay, decided to go with an established head coach instead of following the same course he did in 2004.

Mora was the 49ers' defensive coordinator when he was hired by the Falcons, and he got off to a rousing start. Atlanta won the NFC South and came up one win short of the Super Bowl, losing at Philadelphia for the conference title.

After a 6-2 start the following year, the Falcons lost six of their last eight games to miss the playoffs and keep alive the franchise's streak of never having two straight winning seasons.

Atlanta followed a similar path this year, starting out 5-2 before losing seven of nine -- including its last four home games.

That didn't go over well with Blank, who has spent lavishly to build a perennial playoff contender. The hands-on owner also was bothered by several off-the-field incidents, most notably a radio interview late this season in which Mora said his dream job was to coach at the University of Washington, his alma mater.

Mora said he was only kidding, but had to apologize after being summoned to Blank's office.

Well, even thought Atlanta ownership is solid, who wants to coach a team that has a solid running back as it's starting QB?

Mora Sr. was right. The guy that gets this job is doomed to sit have his best QB as a backup or possibly lose him to free agency.

Wow, he just signed a TEN YEAR deal last summer I believe...

Yup, just read the rest of your post...

Once again, the ownership (Blank) caters to Vick....talk about a doomed franchise

You got to wonder now with Petrino leaving will QB Brian Brohm stay for his Sr. year or decide to enter the draft. If he does, he is top five choice in my book and helps our chances of getting Joe Thomas.

I really do think Arthur Blank is losing it....if he ever had it in the first place.

What's he trying to do? Prove he's become more senile than Al Davis?

I am surprised by this move! I don't think that Petrino was on anybody's radar scan. I suspect Rich McKay had a lot to do with this decision. He has always been a bit unconventional, which fits right in with the ownership.

We'll see what happens, but I still am of the old school that believes that it is a rare occurrance when a college HC comes to NFL and has instant success. Even JJ struggled his first year and what saved him was trading his best player away and getting a bunch of draft picks that allowed him to build a good solid team in his mold.

He's trying to salvage Vick.

Who are we to judge whether it's a bad move or not? Sure, some may look and see they brought a college coach to coach a college QB (more like college RB). I think Petrino will be going with Shaub and that he's gonna do something more creative with Vick but who knows.

I just feel bad for the kids like Brohm who expect their coach to be here epsecially when he signs a 10 year deal just last summer. Maybe Brohm will head for the draft now and Petrino can draft him in atlanta just like Spurrier and Pitino would do...

I don't feel "sorry" for any of the kids, they can transfer schools just like coaches can change jobs. Coaches lie. Recruiters lie. It's part of the little dance they do - look no further than Houston Nutt's mess in Arkansas or Saban's lame excuses for taking the 'Bama job. But for every lying coach, there are the Trace Armstrongs and Sam Kellers of the world that bolt one school for another.

I DO feel sorry for Brohm. He was counting on his coach to help him improve his draft status in his Senior year.

Well, he may end up with an even BETTER coach, or he may end up with a worse coach. The irony here is that this will prepare Brohm for real life, especially life in the NFL. And who's to say that Petrino won't draft Brohm in a year?

This creates an interesting scenario doesn't it?

If Petrino is smart, he uses his draft pick to get Brohm back, and trades Michael "Cordell Stewart" Vick to the Raiders for Randy Moss. You upgrade your QB and Wide Receiver set up and put yourself in position to go forward with a QB you are familiar with. Yes, it will be a rough year for them going the whole season with a rookie, but at some point, Atlanta needs to learn that they will never go anywhere with Vick as a QB. Vick sucks.

Looks like Hue Jackson will be leaving CIN to be the OC under Petrino...and the ASU coaching connection rolls on. :)

Of course, that means Alex Wood could be going back to the Bengals...good luck with that.

Good point. Brohm and Bush both have until the 15th to decide, but I think they'll both stay unless Petrino has already told him he'll draft him this year...
