DID STEELERS YANK RUG FROM GRIMM?

As the media continues to try to understand the process that resulted in conflicting reports regarding whether the Steelers would hire Mike Tomlin or Russ Grimm to be the team's next head coach, the hot rumor at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama (where various league types currently are gathered) is that Grimm was indeed offered the job before it went to Tomlin.

As the story goes, the Steelers called Grimm on Saturday and told him not to believe what the media was reporting about Tomlin. Then, the Steelers and Grimm negotiated a contract, and Grimm was told that he could tell his family that he was the guy, which he did.

But then, as the story goes, Commissioner Roger Goodell got involved and suggested to Steelers chairman Dan Rooney that it would be nice if the Steeler would hire one of the minority candidates, given that the Rooney Rule was named after him. Rooney relented.

On Sunday morning, Rooney met with Art II and Kevin Colbert and told them about the decision. Both initially disagreed because a deal had been done with Grimm. But the contract hadn't been signed, and Art II and Colbert deferred to Dan.

Grimm was then told about the decision, and he was obviously pissed. But, to date, he has been discreet regarding his displeasure, presumably because he plans to continue working in the industry that has only 32 job locations. Tomlin was then called on Sunday afternoon, and he was informed that he was the guy.

One source told us that he has been hearing this rumor "all day" in Alabama. Though we're not saying that any of this actually happened, the mere fact that this story is making the rounds at the Senior Bowl is newsworthy, in our opinion.

Especially since the events that transpired on Saturday night and Sunday were so **** bizarre.

Meanwhile, a reader tells us that Mike Prisuta of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has been insisting in radio appearances that his story linking Grimm to the job was on the money. Though we poked fun at Prisuta's predicament on Sunday, it could be that he was right, after all.

I don't know if it is true or not but if it was it would explain all the confusion on Saturday and Sunday. With reporters claiming Tomlin was the man before he was even informed and then Saturday night a Pitt. reporter claiming Grimm was offered the job. I don't know something was up with all that.

a Pitt. reporter .

Yes his name is Mike Prisuta and he consistantly spouts off at the mouth, his comments about Grimm were purely speculation/opionion.

Not true

very true. Tomlin was a hire to promote Rooney's legacy. Grimm was told verbally he had the job. He would not make this up.

I think its a great hire for Arizona, at least on Offensive side of the ball. You guys may get whipple too.

Ben Rothlisbereger is an inferior QB imo to Matt Lienert, yet Whiz playcalling made him almost unbeatable till he smashed his face headfirst into a car. Whiz will design an offense that will make Lienert look like an all pro. You have Larry Fitzgerald...who must be thrilled with the Grimm hire. Both went to Pitt. Your running game will improve. Grimm had the over the hill RB and a scatback who never started in college look like all pro.

I don't know how your defense looks like. I think you are set on offense. With high draft picks...Defense could be addressed. Should be an exciting year coming up.

I read the Trib: Can't argue with that point.

Who cares??? the assumption is we hired him because he was the best coach available for this team....why all these second-guessing posts by a bunch of fans?? Time will tell if we're on the right path.....till then, we need to chill.

For a supposedly macho sport like football, the NFL as a whole is like one big soap opera.....back-stabbing, flip-flopping, gossipy and bit$hy.....and no, I'm not just talking abut TO here.....what a punk.

I understand that the Steelers, to their credit, don't change coaches often
but this was the clumsiest handling of a coaching change that I've seen in a long time.

There is no reason to believe that Tomlin can't or won't be a good NFL head coach. But I don't understand the Steelers unloading such a large chunk of their existing coaching staff in the process while their player personnel are still of playoff caliber.

And with Tomlin coming in, and being a devotee of the Cover 2 defense instead of the 3-4 that Dick Lebeau has long favored, I would wonder how much longer Lebeau will stick around.

This is ending up as a major shakeup for the coaching staff of a team that is one year out from a SuperBowl Championship and a healthy QB away from contending for another one.

All I know is that AZ picked up a top-notch position coach in Grimm...IMO the BEST OL coach in the game.
This is a huge huge loss for the Steelers.
I wasn't upset about Whiz because I'm used to Pitts. OCs going in and out like a revolving door....plus, I hadn't been impressed with Whiz's play calling for about 3 years...BUT, I honestly don't know if that was Whiz's fault or that he was dealing with an offense that couldn't comprehend complexity?

But Grimm is a different story, and a coach that will be sorely missed.

I'm excited about this year all the way around. It looks like Whiz is putting together an all-star supporting cast and you'll see immediate improvement. All the tools are there, in fact the personnel had already been there to be successful. I'm now convinced that Denny Green was the biggest ***** to ever put on a headset.
I'm also excited about what Tomlin might bring to Pittsburgh.

Big changes everywhere...in Pittsburgh and in Pittsburgh SW.

Something we have known for the last 3 years .. when he first was hired he started out with a bunch of positive hot air that we all sucked up and got excited and then when it came down to playing games we saw the real Denny ...
