Sources: Cowboys pick Garrett, but role is undecided
ESPN.com news services

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has decided to hire Jason Garrett to at least be Dallas' offensive coordinator -- and possibly to be the successor to retired head coach Bill Parcells.

A source told ESPN's Ed Werder on Wednesday night that Jones considers Garrett, a former backup to quarterback Troy Aikman, to be one of the most promising offensive coaches in the league and was so determined to bring him back to the Cowboys organization that he would have been added to Parcells' staff had Parcells decided to coach the final year of his contract.

Instead, Parcells stepped down Monday after four seasons with the Cowboys, ending a 19-year coaching tenure that included two Super Bowl champoinships with the New York Giants.

Jones must decide by Thursday whether to hire Garrett as offensive coordinator because the Miami Dolphins set a deadline for the Cowboys to hire their quarterbacks coach when granting the Cowboys permission to interview Garrett.

The Cowboys could appoint Garrett offensive coordinator to secure his services while eliminating the Dolphins from the equation. Then Jones could deliberate whether to appoint him as the head coach later after interviews with other head coach candidates, primarily San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips or San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

In related news, Cowboys passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Todd Haley is being released from his contract so he can pursue the offensive coordinator opening in Arizona, a team source told Werder on Thursday morning.

Haley -- the assistant coach whom Terrell Owens was seen screaming at on the sideline when the Cowboys lost in Philadelphia -- was one of Parcells' closest assistants.

The Cowboys also have denied assistant head coach and principal play-caller Tony Sparano the chance to pursue other jobs so he can be involved in play-calling once Garrett is formally hired, Werder reported.

Garrett spent the last two seasons coaching Miami's quarterbacks. He played for the Cowboys from 1993-99, appearing in 23 games (nine starts). He also played for the Giants, Tampa Bay and Miami. Garrett retired in 2004.

Garrett's father, Jim, was a longtime scout for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys haven't had an offensive coordinator since Maurice Carthon served in that role under Parcells in 2004. This season, Sparano coached running backs and the offensive line and Haley was the passing game coordinator.

Jones earlier this week spoke to Sparano, Haley and secondary coach Todd Bowles, a candidate to replace Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator, about the head coaching job.

Phillips, who was in Mobile scouting Senior Bowl practices, said he hadn't heard from anybody yet, including the Cowboys.

"If it's true, we'll just go on with the process and see what happens," Phillips told The Associated Press by telephone. "I've got a great job where I am and a great football team. I wasn't looking for anything, but I've always wanted to do what I can do as a head coach, and Dallas is certainly a premier job."

The Cowboys have declared that finding the coaches who can develop young Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo is a point of emphasis in replacing Parcells.

Cardinals | Haley expected to become off. coordinator
Thu, 25 Jan 2007 06:27:24 -0800

Updating a previous report, Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Todd Haley is expected to accept an offer by the Arizona Cardinals to become their offensive coordinator.

now that it says expected...does that mean he has taken the job? or are they assuming that he'll take the job? i know this sounds like a dumb question but reading this doesn't make me think that Haley is a done deal

not a done deal until it shows up on azcardinals.com......but it's a good bet that it's gonna happen.

I would rather have Shurmur but Haley was more or less the Cowboys offensive coordinator since he was responsible for their passing game. I felt the Cowboys had a respectable passing attack. Haley also coached the receivers which is an added plus. Very solid hire if it occurs

I can tell you this much, Haley is a hella of a lot better than Tony Sparano. It's a loss for the Cowboys!

So now we have 2 from the Cowher coaching tree and we now add one from Parcells tree .. can't get much better than that .. lets see if they can all pool their knowledge and put it to good use ...

Since when have we had the choice of choosing between 2 good up and coming coordinators.. I am not soo much worried that they haven't done OC stuff yet as the Whis will call plays..But you can't BUT be estatic at the staff we have assembled so far.. This is the start of a new generation of Cardinals.. We all knew it would come.. Most of knew, given a stream of revenue from a sold-out new stadium, naming rights and accomplished coaching, the best has yet to come..

I just hope this momentum carries over into FA being lured here by $ and a VERY GOOD POSSIBILITY of being a contender.. Yes Kool-Aid, but man it has never been this good in AZ..

TO hating the guy is good enough for me. :garfield:

A solid spend in FA is all we need to become contenders.

Is anybody else concerned about the horrible play calling by the Cowboys against the Seahawks in the playoffs and the fact that they didn't capitalize on the secondary issues?

Maybe it was Parcell, maybe it was just one game. I just have questions.

Haley only oversees the passing game, he doesn't call the plays.

Haley was the assistant to Charlie Weiss at some point in his career as well. Sounds like a great list of people he has been around to learn from...WOW seems as if Whiz is going after some serious talent for his staff. What an interesting philosophy.....

Billy Davis .. ?? he will bring some good input after being the DC in SF .. another different point of view to share with the rest of the staff ..

We really have something going on here with alot of talented coaches .. it can only be beneficial to the players to be able to learn from these guys ..

Whisenhunt will call the plays so you don't have to worry about Haley doing much playcalling. He will help design plays and prepare packages. He will also help mentor the receivers. I think it's an excellent particularly in lieu of the offensive coordinator we had last year.

It really cannot be as bad as when the Cards played the Vikings and we threw the ball like 50 times and ran it 6 times.Whis has stated that he will play the offense into it's strengths and we have strengths, with proper play calling and coaching and some tweaking of the offensive line ,look out NFC we have the talent to be the best offense in the conference.
