Now that we've got 2 real safeties... any thoughts on how Clancy might approach the playcalling/D-forms differently in 07? I don't have any idea  But I like to guess and feel free to call me a windbag, I just like to talk football.

I do believe that Coach Pendergast did well with what he's had in the past and that the Terrence Holt acquisition will have more impact than we might imagine at present. In 2005/6 we had 1 shutdown-capable Safety in Adrian Wilson. What did Coach Clancy do with him? He often sent him in for the QB kill for added pressure. Often enough that ADUB ended up breaking an NFL record for the position with 8 sacks.

Did Coach Pendergast have a choice? I don't think so. Without applying extra pressure via Wilson, QBs have an easier time finding receivers in the flats and wherever the free safety is. I like to look at the Redskins' secondary problem in '06. I'm far from a Redskins fan or faithful 'skins game watcher but we all know that they also have a single shutdown-capable safety in Sean Taylor. Archuleta (Cover 2 expert) just isn't the answer as a strong safety. His Rams days as a shutdown safety just didn't happen in Washington. As far as I remember, the Redskins were torn to shreds on D because of the lack of pressure and Archuleta getting beat. Sound familiar? QBs had time and just avoided Sean Taylor's kingdom, tearing the Redskins apart. Brad Johnson in Week 1 converted 3rd down after 3rd down. Where? Everywhere that Taylor wasn't. This would be repeated throughout their 5-11 (familiar again) 2006 season.

In 2005/2006, I like to believe that Coach P sent in ADUB for the kill more often than we would have expected because he knew that he only had 1 real safety. Rather than watch the Strong Safety getting burned, we'll send in Free Safety Wilson for the QB kill. I think it was well done, so does Wilson's NFL safety record breaking 8 sacks. I think the theory was often, 'if you're going to beat the safeties, you're going to have to do it quickly'. The joke might be that they often sure did do it quickly but it's less painful to watch than seeing the '06 Redskin's method of losing - fans watching the Washington D clearly challenging the O to pass the ball into full pass coverage and succeed.

Back to the Cards... I'm far from an expert and only hypothesizing that we're going to see ADUB much more often in the backfield than ever before. Less frequently will we see him having to assist making tackles at the LOS or helping out in the flats. With Holt and Wilson out there, it's just going to be much easier for the Cards to shutdown the deep threat. With the deep threat gone, the possibilities are endless for applying pressure on the rush and pass attack. I also think the Clancy Pendergast haters are going to get an eye opener in 07... much to do with our recent signing of Holt.

This is only the beginning, I think.
