Certainly if Thomas is there we take him. But, if he is gone I have said before we need to either trade down a couple of spots and take Brown. Maybe, just go ahead and take him at 5. We just don't know how high Whis/Grimm rank him. One thing about Brown he is considered a better run blocker then Thomas. In fact, Brown is considered outstanding in run blocking. Thomas is certainly the better pass blocker and is also good at run blocking. The fact we are going to be a running team is strong in Brown's case.
But, I have the feeling that we could very well take AP. Plus, if that happened wouldn't be surprised to see Edge traded.
Here's the deal: Whis is going to run smash mouth Steeler's running attack. The signing of Smith today is the point to all that. Now, we know that Edge doesn't like a FB in his way. He wants to see all the holes for cutbacks. So, I could see Edge going bye-bye for a draft pick and the new attack would be AP/Shipp. Both of those two would run better behind Smith.

"Players also have to be careful about abstaining from a Pro Day showing. Gaines Adams from Clemson did extremely well at the Combine and was the fastest lineman in his group, but he felt he could not do any better and sat out the timing exercises on campus. Adams did do the field drills and flashed the skills that make him a sought-after prospect. But if that many scouts and coaches come out to see a player, that player should be obliged to make a statement for his draft status. He's going to have to practice every day for however many years he is a professional football player anyway. Ditto for running back Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma and offensive tackle Joe Thomas of Wisconsin. They could learn a lesson from WR Calvin Johnson, QB JaMarcus Russell, DB LaRon Landry and LB Patrick Willis -- all four did complete or almost complete Pro Day workouts, and for the most part they were solid. These are the last images a team has before the ranking of prospects begins."
I copied this from the article about pro days. It sounds as if the Cards scouts are not impressed with the top three players who could end up being available at #5. Not sure if this is smoke screen or these players didn't meet expectations and there is doubt about their work ethic and whether they will make it as pros.

I don't put much stock into a mock draft analysis that thinks that LD was playing RT instead of LT. Everybody knows that the Cards need an OT, but it is pretty amazing to me that this guy thinks we need a RT, not a LT and has us drafting for need only. He also has AP dropping to #12. This is a mock draft based solely on team needs and most teams in the top 10, historically, don't draft a top 10 player for need, they try to draft the best impact player they can get, regardless of position.

Brown would be a slight reach, but one worth making because of the HUGE need involved.
I quit buying or reading SI about 5 years ago because they say dumb things like the Cards needing a right tackle. We need a left tackle as everyone else in the world knows.

Correct about their error on the RT issue. They don't even know that Wells did an excellent job when moved over there. But Brown is a LT and that is a Huge need for us. If Thomas gone, I would be very happy to hear his name called.
