Jets sign DE Wadsworth, out of NFL since 2000

March 26, 2007

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- The New York Jets signed defensive end Andre Wadsworth, out of football since 2000, to a contract Tuesday.
His rookie year was his only full season, and he was then hampered by the knee problems. Wadsworth had three operations on his right knee and one on the left when the Cardinals opted to not pick up the last three years of his six-year, $42.143 million contract when they released him in 2001.

Because of the health issues, Wadsworth appeared in just 36 games in three seasons, starting 30. The former Florida State standout has 119 tackles, eight sacks, three fumble recoveries and one interception in his career.

Wadsworth walked on to the Seminoles and developed into what was thought to be a can't-miss NFL prospect when he was drafted after quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf.

He was expected to join a Cardinals defensive line that featured three first-round selections: Wadsworth, tackle Eric Swann (1991) and end Simeon Rice (1996). But Swann also had knee problems, and Rice and tackle Mark Smith were considered malcontents. As a result, the four never took the field at the same time.

After reading the article on him that was posted a few months ago, I wish him the best and hope he can be a solid player for a couple of years.

Ill be honest, after 12 knee surgeries and a six year hiatus from the league, his chances are not good.....however, I wish nothing but the best....he had to battle not only knee injuries, but the Card's front office while here

Just remember guys.. Wadsworth was one of those "can't miss picks!" He was thought of just like Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson, etc are thought of today.

Just goes to show.. you can never be sure when it comes to the draft. I hope we have better luck this year, but best of luck to Andre.

Oh sure, blame the doctor. Did it ever cross your mind that some individuals inherit these predispositions. Wadsworth was probably born that way. Why is it that we can accept that certain people are born with certain genetic predispositions like Sickle Cell Anemia or Cystic Fibrosis but when it comes to people being more fragile, it's always the surgeons fault. Seriously, some athletes are just born with certain inherant flaws. Some people have weaker ligaments. It's unfortunate but that's the reality. Some people are just injury prone and that's not the fault of the physician. But in our society, we are always looking to find blame with someone or something...aka the lawyer's perspective.

I hope he does well! If he starts, I'll be watching Jets games for a few games anyway... would be awesome to see his first sack in a while.
