I'll tell ya,you can love these guys or hate em (Im a fan of the show), but they DO talk more Cardinal football than any sports talk show which I think is GREAT!!!

Today they are talking about the Cards starting the switch to the 3-4 Defense. MJ talked with Whiz and got some good info. He also talked with AW......

1. The 3-4 is coming soon. They are going to experiment with the following lineup immediately:

PLEASE EXCUSE MY SPELLING, TOO LAZY TO LOOK IT UP!!

LDE- Darnell Dockett
NT- Kendrick Clancey
RDE- for now Antonio Smith, but will try to upgrade in the draft

LOLB- Okefer
ILB- Carlos Dansby
ILB- Gerald Hayes
ROLB- Bertrand Berry

LCB- Antrel Rolle
FS- Terrance Holt
SS- AW
RCB- E.Green or R. Hood (one will start, other nickel)

2. Other teams that will play the 3-4 are SF, Pitt, San Diego and the Browns to name a few.

3. Whiz likes the 3-4 because of the blitzing possibilities, the versitility it gives the team and the confusion it causes on the opposing QB.

4. We will need a stout DL to make this work as the NT will get double teamed a lot. Clancy may be undersized to be effective in the 3-4 so Gabe Watson could be the man there. Watson is actually bigger than BIG! Hes at 370# right now. Also, Allen Branch could be selected to play the position for us.

5. Calvin Pace will start ahead of B. Berry for now at ROLB

6. For now Whiz says they will use a hybrid version of the 4-3, 3-4.

7. AW told MJ that he thinks Carlos Dansby is going to have a GREAT year because he is freed up in this system, has lost some weight for more speed, is in a contract year and will be extremely motivated and also, in this system will have the flexibility to roam more.

My big worry with that is how would Berry and Chike transition to OLB?

Where does Darryl Blackstock play in this? He was on NFL Sirius radio yesterday and said that he has been named a starter. I was confused about it because I didn't see him listed anywhere as a starter as he was also talking about the fact about they don't know what defense they are going to play because they haven't got a playbook yet and will see what it is like today in minicamp. He did talk a lot about the 3-4 defense as he is very familiar with it. Maybe it is Blackstock instead of Gerald Hayes although I really can't see that either. I do know that he also said that the players are very excited about it because the offense is harder to scheme against the 3-4.

I'm glad to hear that we are doing something different on the defensive side of the ball. Even with all the great plays we made last year, we ranked #29 out of 32 teams. :frown:

This also makes me wonder if we are wide open now when it comes to drafting - Whisenhunt and Pendergast must be targeting a few key guys, and that's a good thing.

I think Blackstock would fill in better than Okeafor at one of those OLB positions because he's more fleet of foot. Berry would work as a rush end.

i wonder if clancy knows how to coach the 3-4. i thought we were keeping clancy so he could keep his system in place with the same guys. but now we're gonna make clancy run a system that isnt his and he isnt all that familiar with? okkkk

IMO Bick and MJ talk more Cardinals than anyone else on the radio. Thats my opinion. I dont have any time sheets or dialogue transcripts to substantiate this, its my opinion based on the time ive spent listening to them and the others in the morning.

I love this for Karlos Dansby....he is a tremendous player.I think Okeafor could work but I question Berry. Not because of ability...he is talented...but durability.Tim Crowder from Texas would be a great pick for us at DE...athletic enough to play down or stand him up.I think this is the last run for Calvin Pace....this is his last chance.

Whisenhunt kept Clancy around cause he knows how to come up with different blitzing schemes. Unfortunallly when you have to blitz all the time it becomes easier for the the offense to pick the blitz up and burn you down field. The cardinals need to up-grade that defense in the worst way. Carriker imo, is the person the cardinals need to draft. He has all the measurable for a DE in the 3-4 and he has a non-stop motor. this is the guy the cardinals need.

Yhea Carriker would be great but there is no way we are going to get him at the top of the 2nd round, he will be gone already. My biggest worry would be transitioning both Berry and Okeafor at the same time, hopefully Blackstock or Brandon Johnson could show some ability in the 3-4 as well. If this 3-4 lineup will free up Karlos more than I am all for it. I would imagine on known passing downs we would probably see Berry at DE.

Coaching is a 50+ hour a week gig. Good defensive coaches understand ALL basic schemes much like physicians are taught comprehensive general medicine...

...they then develop preferences and specialize in a particular defensive scheme (base 3-4, base 4-3, Tampa 2, Cover 2)...just as physicians specialize in orthopedics, pathology, pediatrics, laryngology, etc.

Some coaches aren't creative thinkers...but they are excellent teachers able to instruct players on a particular scheme...much like some physicians aren't good at clinical research, but are effective at diagnosing and treating illnesses.

Clancy's strength is that he is an innovator (a clinical researcher if you will). He is able to creatively tinker with base defenses modifying it to suit the personnel at hand. We've all read the Whis quote where he says that he can't keep Clancy out of his office because he keeps coming up with new ideas.

Grimm on the other hand isn't an innovator (nothing too creative about smash mouth power blocking)...but he is an excellent teacher, able to fine tune players skills to suit the system.

Whis has done an excellent job of assembling a coaching staff with both teachers and innovators. Clancy will do fine in his role...making unpredictable adjustments to the base defenses while keeping an attacking overall theme....whether it's a 3-4 ...or a 4-3.
