Big Ben's utterances deserve our attention

By Joe Starkey
TRIBUNE-REVIEW

It is purely reflexive, in this town, to dissect Ben Roethlisberger's every utterance as if it were a Barry Bonds urine sample.

So let's get to it.

Roethlisberger went deep on various issues Wednesday in an interview with ESPN Radio's Mark Madden -- and put the rest of us in perfect position to play Friday Morning Quarterback.

Quote: On a recent comment that his relationship with Bill Cowher wasn't all that cozy, Roethlisberger said: "The big thing is, that kind of got misprinted. I wouldn't say we had a bad relationship. I'd just say we weren't on a friendly term. It wasn't something where I really wanted to go into his office and just sit down and b.s. with him, you know?"

Analysis: Next time Ben tries to douse a fire, he should use something other than gasoline.

Quote: "You gotta have a guy in your corner. I think Coach Cowher was there most of the time. And, there were times when certain guys were hurt or something, he would kinda roll his eyes and say that they weren't really hurt. You know, I went through that a couple of times. But, hey, that's the past and Coach Cowher was obviously a phenomenal coach, a Hall of Fame coach, and I feel blessed to have the years I had with him."

Analysis: Like, wow. Whatever was happening there, Roethlisberger's record of 34-12 under Cowher speaks to the fact that coaches and quarterbacks don't need to like each other. Oftentimes, it's best that way.

Quote: "To me, excuses are no good. Own up to things. That's why last year I said, 'I'm not blaming anything on an accident, an appendectomy, on anything other than just playing bad. That's all it was.' "

Analysis: We can say what Ben can't -- the accident and the appendectomy had to hinder him early in the year. Actually, he recently told The Trib, talking about whether he was afraid to get hit, "Maybe after the appendectomy a little bit because my stomach hurt; I didn't want to get hit in the stomach." Can you blame him?

Quote: "I think we will use three tight ends. You can do that when you have athletes like Heath Miller. I think we're going to use him a lot more this year, split him out, try to get him matched up on smaller cornerbacks, like Baltimore does with Todd Heap."

Analysis: Amen.

Quote: On Alan Faneca -- "You know what, it's one of those things where you have to be careful what you say. ... Alan Faneca deserves, you know, to be paid probably the most money of any lineman in the game right now."

Analysis: Could have been more careful there.

Quote: "I do think we'll throw more, and I do think we'll be better at it. I think we'll be more precise; it's not going to be just run-run-run, try to hit the home run ball. ... I definitely do not think we'll be as predictable. Last year it was run on first down, run on second down, well, you got third-and-9, what are you going to do?"

Analysis: Somewhere in Arizona, Ken Whisenhunt just removed a dart from his backside. Steelers fans should hope Roethlisberger doesn't throw too much. He had the fourth-most attempts in team history last season, and, as you may have heard, that didn't work out real well.

Seems your coach had his own slew of faux paus regarding opening mouth, inserting foot.

Didn't he pretty much blame everything on Ben, while absolving himself of any blame what so ever regarding Ben being put in too early?

Isn't it interesting on how, during SB years, coaches strut about, taking credit for the results..but on other years, it's never their fault??

Interesting that Whiz, in previous year, told the Raiders "don't make an offer" because he was going back to Pittsburg, because he was in line to succeed Cowher.

For some odd reason, Pittsburg didn't want Whiz as their head coach.

Ever wonder why?

You'll find out soon enough... :toot:

Ben needs to shut his festering pie hole and be grateful that the systems and schemes employed by Bill Cowher allowed Roethlisberger to look like a good QB when he is not.

We'll see if he's afraid to get hit by the Cards soon enough. What a tool.

Think Whis will send AW on a few blitzes to rattle Ben's cage? I know I would.

I'm sorry, how many years of playing and coaching experience did Cower have? If he doesn't think you're injured, then you ain't injured. Pansy.
It's funny how Ben thinks he can throw ball. He stinks. They probably should've run the ball more last season. If he thinks his ability wasn't being utilized, then one would think he would've made better use of his opportunities. He is now the official starting QB of my own "All Overated Team of Current Players." He was already, but QB's get the "official announcment" treatment.

I hoe you have Grossman as his back up - two years running and poor QBs make it to a Super Bowl - maybe we should have kept McCown :ha:

I'm sorry Ben thinks he knows more than Bill Cowher but I think we need to put things into perspective Small Ben. Here's SI's take on the whole Ben Bs.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/michael_silver/05/16/coaches/index.html

Most conspicuously, we have Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who won a Super Bowl under Cowher in his second NFL season, telling Pittsburgh's ESPN Radio 1250-AM how happy he was that The Chin is chilling in Raleigh, N.C., watching his daughters bang on the hardwood while Mike Tomlin tries to become the franchise's third coaching legend.

"I wouldn't say we had a bad relationship," Roethlisberger said of Cowher. "I'd just say we weren't on a friendly terms. It wasn't something where I really wanted to go into his office and just sit down and [talk] with him, you know? You gotta have a guy in your corner. I think coach Cowher was there most of the time. And, there were times when certain guys were hurt or something, he would kinda roll his eyes and say that they weren't really hurt. You know, I went through that a couple of times.

"Coach Tomlin likes to have fun with the guys. I think the guys are more receptive to that. They feel more comfortable being able to communicate with that type of coaching."

It's nice that Roethlisberger and the guys are having so much fun in the spring, what with the birds singing and the bees buzzing and the Pittsburgh weather enjoying its seasonal shift from bitter chill to suffocating heat and humidity. But something tells me their appreciation of Tomlin's style -- and their lasting impressions of life under Cowher -- will be a direct result of what happens on the field once the actual games begin.

Big Ben = Big ******* :crybaby:

And easily one of the most overrated players today and highest picked in the draft with no rhyme or reason.

Throwing the ball more really was a GREAT idea...

...for their opponents!
