Just heard Bick and MJ and some takes on the Cards amidst the contract/cut talks with Clancy and M. Brown.

Heres a few items....

1. They pointed out how the Cards have some of their deals structured as Roster Bonuses which places the salaries against the cap in their entirety as opposed to amortizing it over a few years. Their opinion is this could be a way of circumventing the salary cap in a negative way by giving the appearance that they are spending cap money when they are really just writing it off quicker than some other teams.

2.The Cards want to free up cap space by lowering the aforementioned players salaries or by cutting them in order to get some more depth at tight end.

3. MJ spoke with an offensive lineman yesterday about Gabe Watson (supposed to start ahead of Clancy) and asked him if he is ready. The olineman said that hes lost weight, looks good, but no way could he go an entire game. Needs to work on his endurance.

4. Looks like a rotation is shaping up amoungst Gabe Watson, Allan Branch and Antonio Smith.

5. Kendrick Clancy was starting in every camp workout to date.

6. If Milford Brown is cut (MJ says he is "OK" but not great, but at least hes proven he can play) then that leaves Elton Brown next. MJ does not think much of E. Brown, but did mention that he has lost weight, looks better and is fired up to get a fresh start with the new staff.

7. Pointed out how the Nose Tackles take a beating in this league and how the cutting of Clancy could come back to haunt the Cards.

Just a few tid bits, gotta get to work now......

What might be a pain now, could be beneficial in the long run.
By structuring the contracts the way they have this off season it appears that they have looked at the FA pool this year, and the next and possibly even the next, and decided they want the space down the line.
I may be over sensitive but I even think they may be looking at 2007 as a 'getting to know you' kinda year. And therefore by getting the extras paid this year can release some players who maybe didnt fit, without any cap hit in 2008 or 2009. The front office is probably not busting Whiz's what-sit, and threatening him if he doesn't make the post season.
If we get Faneca (who seems to be the Message Board target numero uno) in 2008, for nothing but a signing bonus, and some other stud that is in free agency, then we will all be proclaiming the genius that is Whiz, and those that are unhappy now, will be chastising themselves for even questioning why we paid all this money, upfront, this year.

This FA was pretty weak in my books and I think Whiz and co. spent their money wisely. I know a lot of people think we paid Al Johnson too much but let's just see how he does in the trenches before we paint him a failure and a waste. I think next year when we're sititng with a good chunk of money for the FA pool a lot of nay-sayers might be eating their words. We'll see.

It's already a pain. The Cards have to create at least 5 roster spots for their draft picks, assuming Breaston makes the team; which probably means "LeBron" will not. We know Brown & Clancy are halfway out the door, so that's three...Femi makes four?

A source with knowledge of the situation said the Cardinals’ efforts to restructure the deals is to get salaries in line with their projected backup roles and not to clear salary cap space.

The Cardinals also need to clear roster space at some point for their five draft picks. Currently, the team has a maximum 83 players besides their draftees, so five spots must be created.

Who could be the 5th space?

*cough*JJ Arrington*cough*How much Cap space does JJ give us if we drop him? I keep hearing Berry's name blowing in the wind.. That would open up a lot of space.. but when the guy is on he is a QB eating beast.

Femi or JJ, maybe...

Femi AND JJ? :frown:

That will come back to haunt an offense for sure, especially with the TE issues we have now.

I would be happy with a 6 pack. :) :Cards logo:Good one! I'm still for giving this kid a chance though. I think that if we can get him out of the backfield with the ball he can do some damage. We'll see.. If he does do something great I won't be one of the people saying I told you so though.. because I'm skeptical at best.

JJ's got one year left to show his stuff.

I HATE that they cut Clancy. He shut the middle run game D-O-W-N. He may have not been huge, but he was strong and could hold 2 blockers.

I'm not sure what the reason for cutting a starter would be? It's not just money...if so, they could have easily reworked Warner's deal. I bet 3 guys would have given up some $$ so Clancy could be on the team.

come on- keeping Antonio Smith and letting Clancy go...<cheechandchongupinsmoke smile>

The Cardinals released three veterans Tuesday for reasons that had more to do with style than money, according to coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Maybe they were not happy with Chili Dog's departure?
