When Ben was sacked and the Cardinals refused the penalty why didn't the clock start up again? Does anybody know the rule?

I was asking about this one myself...the game clock should have started up with the play clock, PIT got a chance to huddle and take their time, which was maddening. The penalty was DECLINED, so there was no reason the clock should have remained stopped.
I was very disappointed in the officiating. The other play that REALLY bothered me was the 4th & 1 when we wanted to hurry to the line and QB sneak, but the referee TOOK HIS TIME to walk the ball back to the line and spot it. We got the yard, but that kind of stuff is really obvious when it comes to slighting a team.

I knew I shouldn't of been the only one screaming about that!!! Everyone was just glaring at me because i was royally pissed with the time not running!!!

I agree. Our row was shouting "start the clock". Did the rule change?:cardinals:

YES totally agree. That was almost blantant cheating. The funny thing is. When you have an offensive penalty ie False start, delay, illegal motion, they run 10 SECONDS off the clock in the final minute so they don't do it on purpose to stop the clock. We get a sack and I guess based on the reasoning of the NFL officiating...we should have taken the penalty and let them take 10 seconds off the clock. Remember it happened to us the game against the Rams a couple of years ago, when we were on the 5 yd line. Big false started and by rule the last 7 seconds came off the clock. I agree I think these refs cheat!!! And there is no explanation for it. The whole point of the 10 second run off is when offensive teams commit penalities they get punished for it.

It was a holding call and If the defensive team is behind in the score and commits a foul when it has no time outs left in the final 40 seconds of either half, the offensive team can decline the penalty for the foul and have the time on the clock expire.
They still had a timeout...
It's funny how they can get those things right when it's going against us, huh?:Cards logo:

But this was an OFFENSIVE penalty, and the defense DECLINED it...the offensive player was tackled in the field of play, meaning the clock would have been running. The offense does not get a clock stoppage on an offensive penalty!

The same rule apply's for offense if you have a time out left. If it is in the last 4 minutes of the game the clock will be restarted at the snap. If they didn't have a time out left the game clock would have been run down by 10seconds...

PIT didn't have a time out left, they burned time out #3 with 00:52 remaining. The clock should have been run down.

The ref on the field wound his arm to signal the start of the clock. It was our clock operator that didn't start it. This one isn't on the refs but on our own people.

This post has absolutely nothing to do with the play.
1) the defensive team was winning
2) CARDS had time outs
3) CARDS didn't commit the foul
4) the Defense declined the penalty not the offense
5) The Steelers had no time outs
If you were being sarcastic then sorry it doesn't come accross on the computer....... But if you were being serious then WATCH THE GAME before you start informing us of the rules to certain situations.

I don't think we were the only ones yelling. I assume I am not the only one who saw Whiz and Warner screaming at the refs. I watched in amazament as the clock stayed put...

how would one be able to bring this up to the cardinals organization? this is a pretty serious matter in my own eyes.

Thank you for posting something with some sense...I didn't see the clock signal and I'm surprised they didn't stop the game to review where the clock should have been after the play...

yup..they did call their last one with 52 seconds left.
The refs must have forgot that they lost one on the challenge of our TD.:d'oh:

I already asked this same question this morning and was ridiculed by a bunch of Pitt fans saying that it doesn't matter. I was shouting start the clock, CBS didn't notice they were too busy telling me about Grace Under Water or whatever new show they have on.
I think that was blatant cheating they should have either run 10 seconds off the clock or never stopped it.

I remember Both Wizz and Grimm, as well as a few cards players on the sideline waving their arms in the "Start the Clock" motion, right in front of a ref. I was wondering why the clock had stopped as well...

I was screaming in the stands for the clock to start when it was deemed ready for play from the Ref. I think the clock guy just forgot to start it. Because the penalty call absolutely bailed the Steelers out. With 19secs left with no penalty called. The whole team had to run all the way back to where roethlisberger was sacked and then get ready for a snap. There would of at most been 5 secs left at that point. So I think the clock guy just screwed up.

What do you mean does it matter.....
How many games have we lost in the last minute in the last 2 yrs?????
The difference between 19 seconds and 5 seconds is about 2 plays. That is HUGE!!!!!!!!

It doesn't matter because the game is over, and guess what for once we came up top. no bad calls could hold us back.

I was jumping up and down screaming in the stands and everybody around me started screaming too when I pointed it out.
Hard to believe they made such an enormous error at such a crucial time. If the Steelers would have gotten a couple more plays out of it and pulled off the miracle last second touchdown... we would have had a major mess on our hands.
