Your kidding, right? Look how many on this MB misspell it...purely out of disrespect, then throw in all the Matty boi, Hollywood and all the rest of the BS thrown out there. You can't expect anyone to care about how they spell his name or show any respect at all...they take their cue from the fans. Forget about it.

As long as we're 'gritching' about sports writers in papers, USA today had yesterday's game played in Arizona. They called the Rams loss 'on the road'.

couple more tidbits of the sort :
-nfl.com's depth chart of the Ravens says that their kicker is John Stover
- The official game-day sheet issued by 49ers.com says that there are 3 ravens TE's injured - Todd Heap, Wilcox and Jonathan Ogden.

Bah. I'm with you, Mex. Professional sportswriters should spell names correctly. Its just a requirement.
They should spell correctly, and get facts right. Journalism 101. Its not professional when they don't. I stop reading when they spell it "Bidwell".
And message boards can Hallywood Mattyboi all they want. They are not getting paid and published.
I agree. Accuracy is paramount. Without it, there's no reason for you to read what I or anyone else in the media writes, and there's no reason for us to do what we do.
The problem is that accuracy does not always lie with the reporter. I have had stories changed by copy editors without my knowledge which made them incorrect, such as a story on the new kickoff rules, where I quoted Oregon coach Mike Belotti and attributed the quote to him properly. Upon publication, I learned that the copy editors had changed it to Oregon State coach Mike Belotti.
When that happens, it's clear that it's bad journalism. What's not clear, though, is whose bad journalism it was. Unfortunately, it reflects poorly on all of us in the process no matter who makes the mistake.
