View Full Version : My experience in Washington, D.C. last weekend

Well for those of you that don't know, I live in Virginia and go to college there as well- so when there's a Cardinals game either in Washington, Baltimore, or Charlotte- I jump on it.

I have been to Carolina and I can say this- Panthers fans have class. A lot of it. Yes, they gave me crap, but who wouldn't with Shaun King starting. And it was "gentle" crap, if that makes any sense.

I went to DC this past weekend to see the game, and honestly, have never seen that many low-life drunks with the intelligence of 8 year olds in my entire life. Not once did I flaunt something in their face, but yet, every time I celebrated with my friend and just slapped hands, I had ice thrown at me. To top it all off, after Rackers missed the field goal, a guy got right up in my face and challenged me to fight. Out in the parking lot, someone called out "Hey Fitzgerald!" ...then walked up to me like he was gonna throw a punch..and AGAIN challenged me to fight.

Are all NFL fans like this? I mean are there Cardinals fans like this? Cause this was awful...my friend that took me was wearing a pink Leinart jersey, she's the most innocent of girls, and she was so upset. I hope this is just a Redskins thing, cause I absolutely hate everything about that team, but man- I have never seen a bigger group of stupid drunks in my life. For three hours they tried to make up for their inadequate size by starting fights with a fan who was there to see his team play, and nothing more.

If it wasn't for all the work, I would have posted this sooner, but I did eventually have to get some feedback from you guys.

Wow man, I'm really sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I can't really say much about rather or not that's a standard, to be honest, the only NFL games I have ever attended are Cardinal Home Games. I can say with 100% certainty though that it's NOT like that here, not at all. Ok, I admit, I might have a slight bias for my home town fans, but seriously, I have never seen ANYTHING even close to that from Cardinal Fans. When I was the Seattle Game, section 131 where I usually sit was about 60% Seahawk Blue. There was a lot of jawing back and forth the entire game between Cards fans and Hawks fans, but nothing bad, no personal insults, no fights. At the end of the game we all shook hands and said "good game guys, drive safe getting home."

And that's a division rival team.. trust me man, we're NOTHING like that. I never understood the idea of fighting over football, that makes no sense to me. Again dude, sorry you had to deal with that. If you ever get the chance to come out here for a game, do post and let us know. We'll make sure you have an experience that will make you forget all about Washington. Nothing beats a Cardinal game at UofP.

I was at the game, and most of the Redskins fans I had dealings with were okay. They poked fun and joked around with me, nothing that you experienced..sorry you had to.

The only instance I had was walking into the stadium. A group of drunked a**holes, starting yelling **** p*ssy leave our stadium..ect. Other than that, it was an okay experirence.

Also, that has to be one of the worst tailgating setups I have ever seen.....40+ parking lots at least 3-5 miles from the stadium and they bus about 65% of the fans from those parking lots.

The parking lots at the stadium leave no room to tailgate.

I haven't been to Fedex but many other venues as a visitor. I've never had much trouble - just the normal friendly insults all in fun. I've been offered beer and food from home fans while visiting and I've done the same for visitors. Having said that, there are always idiots who ruin things for good people. It's not a matter of one team having good fans while other teams do not. That's comparable to saying one race or religion is bad and others are good. In truth, there are a few jerks out there no matter what team and the best way to deal with them is to ignore them. I'll bet most skins fans would be embarrassed to treat a visitor in such a way. Too bad you had a lousy experience but I'd give it another chance. If it continues to be that bad, then just give up and watch it from home but I'll wager you just were unfortunate this particular game. Hey - imagine if Rackers made that field goal? :)

amazing how no one around the fool says anything to them. If someone in our area was throwing ice at any fan for any team I'd report it to security.

there's no place for that

At the Monday Night San Fran game we had ice thrown at my wife and the guys wife next to me.

karma will come back to them

I was there and Im sorry that you went through that BS. All the fans near me were great. One guys at the begining of the game saw me and my brother decked out in Cards gear said "Oh Boy im gonna mess with you two hardcore" But he never did. Even after the game he shook our hands and said "Great game, you all should of won that, Joe Gibbs Sucks!" lol
I have been to a lot of Skins/Cards games and never had a problem with skins fans, even back in the day when we were in the same division at old RFK.
As far as tailgating we had pleanty of room so Im not sure where you were at, but we were in the far back corner in front of gate A.

Went to the Cards/Ram game in STL(I live 10 minutes from STL) A guy who was jawing with us the entire game decided to wait until he was walking out to toss a beer on us. Classless! My Bro-in-law chucked a beer($8--idiot) at him and hit him right in the chest! The guys friends thought it was quite funny! Your experience sounds alot worse. I actually sat amongst a group of Skins fans at a game at Sun Devil(almost 10 years ago) and they were actually alot of fun!!!:cardinals:

I walked in with a guy that was weraing a Shipp jersey (I was wearing Edgerrin James), I wonder if it was you.. For the most part, I really enjoyed the give and take, especially early with some people coming up to me with bullhorns but it was mostly in good fun... My only problem was after the game with two guys trashing the Edge and telling me my team sucked... I got in their faces and was pretty nasty with them (After about 10 minutes of straight heckling), so they did end up backing up about 15 yards, but were still pretty classless.. I really enjoyed the game and thought most Redskin fans were great, but there definately were a few drunken holes in the bunch!

What I really enjoyed was the silent comraderie I had with every card fan I saw. Sad to say Sunday was the first time I'd ever met another Card fan, and that in of itself was worth it!:Cards logo:

:football: If you ever go to Philadelphia

1. Wear an Eagles jersey (no matter who you root for).
2. DO NOT cheer against the Eagles.
3. Wear a protective cup (just in case).
4. Be ready for a beer shower.
5. Buy life insurance.

They actually have a jail at the stadium.

Well I guess it's an NFL thing..I mean I had nothing close to that at Carolina..maybe it was because I just had a bad section last weekend. I'll definitely give it another chance though..they can't keep me from watching my Cardinals play.

And the day I finally get to AZ (I'm trying to eventually work down in Okahoma or Phoenix) I will let you guys know for sure. I want a home game experience for once.

There was a guy behind me though that had season tickets in AZ..and he backed me up when I was getting a lot of crap..I wonder if he posts on the board.

Hope to eventually see you guys in AZ soon.

Yeah, having been to games at FedEx before, and living in this area, I was definetly expecting that. My experience wasn't quite as bad as yours, thought. Redskins fans are generally a mix of the old school, polite, friendly types, and trashy "wankstas" (pardon the term) in their twenties to thirties, who have no clue how to enjoy a game unless their team dominates. The people sitting next to me were of the latter type, and those in front of me of the former. One of the guys sitting in front of me was alright after a while when he saw I was there to watch my team and have fun like any other fan, and his buddy was alright too, but they weren't particularly polite or classy. The Second guy exploded on me after I was celebrating Rattay's Touchdown: "YELL IN MY EAR ONE MORE ****** TIME AND ILL BREAK YOU OVER THIS RAIL!" Although I was not anywhere close to "yelling in his ear" and I was cheering a game changing play late in the game....seems like he was angry about his team SUCKING, and took it out on me: A childish Coward lacking the ability of an adult to control the outward expression of his emotions. Do you really think ONE Cardinal fan around you clapping and cheering occasionally is louder than 85,000 Redskin fans perpetually screaming?!

A couple other cowardly skin fans were too scared (or not drunk enough) to actually confront me with their in-depth "analysis" of teams' performance, like the guy who as he passed me in the opposite direction down the steps by "congratulating me" then yelling "Cardinals Suck!" after he had passed me. Or the guy who yelled it from his passing car on my walk to the stadium. As I said, there are some respectful, intelligent Skins fans, One guy congratulated me after the game with a "Good Game, Cards", etc., But these people, it pains me to say, are in the large majority. Most Skins fans (not just from my judgement at the game, I live amongst these people) are Trailer-Trashy drunkards whose only football knowledge is "Dallas SUCKS!". Those who aren't either or are generally quiet, didn't really cheer, and for some reason just kind of stared at me, like "why is he a Cardinal fan?". So yeah, nothing new here, most skins fans=trashy & rude.

On another note though, I was sitting in the row over from Reggie Well's family. They were all trying to wave at him from the sideline but he didn't see them. haha

And on my way out of the stadium, I saw Steve Breaston's family (they were all wearing his jersey) I yelled "Steve Breaston's the Man!" And his Mom like kinda threw her arms up when she understood what I said in sort of a celebratory fashion.

I have been to more away games than home games, We never seem to have much trouble . Just some boos and "Cardinals sucks" yelled in our direction. Just do not put your hands on me or my Cardinals jersey. Had a little trouble in Dallas with that ..Of couse 3:00 games are the worst, to much time for the lousy Dallas fans to drink. Wore a personalized jersey in St L one year and had to lisen to a idiot, that did'nt have as good seats as me yell my last name all game, that got on my nerves. But WE won so I got the last laugh I guess.

I saw Breastosn's family as well, they were in the section next to mine.

On side note, the remaining tickets the Cardinals had for the Skins game, that didn't get claimed by players or season ticket holders, were donated to a childern's hosptial in the DC area. The group of children were proudly cheering for the Cardinals!!

Great job Cards!!! It was a great gesture and put a smile on those kid's faces.

I went to the Cardinals game In detroit 2 years ago. It was so fun to see the Cards live for the first time even thuogh they lost. It really wasnt to bad where I sat The fans around me were pissed at first cause I had my Fitzgerald jersey on but once they found out I wasnt to bad they were just talking to me asking me which college everyone on Arizona went to and who my favorite player was stuff like that.

Once in a while they would mess with me when Detroit scored they would try to get me to sing that stupid song they play each time The lions score or when Arizona got saftied they were trying to get me to give them all high 5's lol it was all in fun though.

I did have one guy way up farther that kept going FITZGERALD a million times that got pretty annoying. Then Rackers hit a big time field goal and of course he had to keep telling me Rackers is the only good player on the team I almost wanted to turn around and say Look at your team but nah it was a cool experience all together.

I guess it comes down to which section you sit in really. If you probably sit in a season ticket holders section your probably going to get it the worse for being in there section.

Saw the Cardinals at Giants stadium once and the Giants fans around me were buying me beers and having a great time with me. The Cardinals won and even then they were very nice. It was a long time ago but I would guess that it's still the same there. New Yorkers get a bad rap but most New Yorkers that I have known are very nice.

Me and my brother(the steelers fan) went to Heinz field three years ago to see Pitt vs. AZ. It was pretty cool, a friend of mine gave us his club seats cuz he couldn't make the game. Believe it or not, the only time I was heckled was when we got off the ferry at the stadium and that was by two little guys around 8 years old, lol. I was wearing my Roy Green jersey. I was surprized the fans there were quite friendly. Living in nw Pennsylvania, everybody loves the steelers or browns and some the bills. But let me tell ya, steelers fans around here are the biggest bunch of sore losers i've ever seen, thats why i was so surprized at the stadium, then again, maybe cuz they kicked our *** they didn't feel the need to bash me. But you can bet your *** i let them hear it a couple weeks ago, hell, i was calling people on the phone i didn't even know just to bust their balls! LOL!

The Eagles are probably the one team I have seen the Cardinals play the most times. I have never seen them play at UofP, but I saw more Eagles vs. Cardinals games at Sun Devil then I can even count, and I always got along well with the Philly Fans. There were usually lots of them too, and of course there were 1 or 2 jerks, but my experience with Philly fans has always been really good, same with Panther Fans, the Panther fans didn't bother me at all.

Some of the interaction I have had with Eagle fans kinda make me wonder if Philly isn't getting a bit of a bum rap. They really don't seem that bad to me at all.

We were at the Eagles/Carolina game last year - it was Garcia's first start after McNabb's injury. On the radio they were saying Garcia was playing lights out, but in the stadium the fans were booing him. A couple of times he had to dump off the ball to avoid the sack, and the booing was really loud. I guess they really wanted A.J. in there and didn't appreciate what a good thing they had with Garcia. He was really something special to see. I hope the Cards coaches have really studied the film and are ready for him.

IMO it's an NFL thing and alcohol only fuels it. I've heard of beatings after Redskins games. I think a few years back an Eagles fan was almost beat to death after a Monday Night game out there. At least they got pounded 52-7 by the Patriots if that makes you feel better.
