NFL passes over Rams
BY JIM THOMAS AND BILL COATS

Although the 3-13 Rams had the worst record in the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers' coaching staff received the conference's invitation to direct one of the squads at the Senior Bowl on Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala. The staffs from the lowest-finishing teams in each conference often are chosen so that they can get a good look at some of the better players who will be available in the April draft. But because changes on Linehan's staff were anticipated, the NFL office bypassed the Rams for the 49ers, whose staff now includes former Rams coach Mike Martz.
Wow, this is pretty stupid on the part of STL to give up the chance to scout the players for the draft up close. But it's inexcusable to let a division opponent take your place, especially when they bring in your former HC to run their offense and will play you twice a year!!! How bad will it look if Martz makes SF into a winner after STL ran him out of town?
I don't see why any SF fans are knocking their recent moves, they are at least acting like a team that wants to get back to their winning ways. SF is really making subtle moves this year to get back on track, and who knows what STL is doing. Now Martz gets an even better chance to see who he can bring into SF for his revamped offense.

The Rams are in turmoil right now, which, I have to admit, makes me insanely happy. LOL
Anyway, the owner Frontiere is on her death bed and they aren't in position to make many coaching or other moves at this time, based on some of the things I've read. There is much gnashing of teeth and wailing in StL right now.
I still maintain that Martz will not make SF into a winner. He didn't make DET into a winner, and he's been run out of town 2 times in the past 3 years.
The NFL caught up to his scheme in 01, and he certainly doesn't have a Warner/Faulk/Holt/Bruce in their prime on the 9ers.

I sure hope you're right, Cardz81...the 49ers are getting a great chance to find some weapons Martz can work with, that's for sure. Too bad they traded that 1st rounder to NE. :)

With a 5-11 record it sure beats the hell out of paying top 10 money to a rookie when it can go to an experienced FA.

part of the issue is that St.L doesn't have a staff together at this time so it would be rather difficult to focus on scouting players and coaching them up if you are minus a coach. Some think this may be why SF hired Martz so quickly instead of interviewing plenty of other people. With that said the Niners have coached the senior bowl every year under the Nolan regime and it hasn't really helped thus far...

At this rate, that will be a good thing for SF, like getting a high 2nd rounder if IND keeps going to the AFC Championship and beyond.
I'm not knocking SF at all, I'm surprised at how foolish STL looks.

I'm still wondering how exactly St.L looks foolish.
This isn't SF's first time coaching the Senior Bowl, the practices there are open to scouts. Many of those guys are going to be in other all star type festivities and alot will be at the combine. Other teams will have plenty of looks at these players so it's not quite exclusive to SF.
Add to that SF has not exactly had success with who it's picked from the Senior bowl. Patrick Willis last year was an obvious choice that does not require coaching him in a senior bowl. The jury is still out on Parys Haralson whom Nolan got to watch a couple years ago.
I really don't think St.L looks foolish because they did not rush to fulfill their OC position to ensure they have a full coaching staff prior to dealing with trying to coach at the Senior Bowl.
