Report: Jaguars for sale

By
The Times-Union

The Jaguars had no immediate comment Wednesday night on a Philadelphia Daily News report that team owner Wayne Weaver is negotiating to sell the team to billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos, who could move the team to Los Angeles.

Team spokesman Dan Edwards said Weaver was traveling Wednesday and would not be available until today.

Metropoulos, 61, the former chairman and chief executive officer of New Jersey-based Pinnacle Foods, denied the newspaper's report.

"I must tell you I haven't had any such discussions," Metropoulos was quoted in the Daily News. "I wouldn't know how to give you any credibility to that because I don't know anything about it."

The Daily News reported that discussions between Weaver and Metropoulos are being brokered by Sal Galatioto of the New York sports investment firm Galatioto Sports Partners. The newspaper reported that Metropoulos previously tried to buy two other NFL franchises, the Oakland Raiders and the Miami Dolphins.

Metropoulos, according to the report, is interested in a 100 percent purchase of the Jaguars immediately, though unnamed sources told the paper he would keep Weaver on for two years while he learns how to operate an NFL franchise. The sources told the newspaper that Metropoulos would bring in minority partners, and that the Jaguars would be a candidate to move to Los Angeles.

Weaver has consistently denied any interest in selling in the team, though he acknowledged last year that he was looking for additional investors.

The Jaguars, who joined the league in 1995, reached the second round of the AFC playoffs last season, but three home games were blacked out because they weren't sold out.

I hope it happens.

As much as I appreciate the apparent long-term commitment the Bidwills have made to Arizona, there's a nagging fear Bill and Co. would jump to LA if given the right offer.

Any team that moves to Los Angeles would have to finance their own stadium or have the NFL pay for it. Right now, the NFL isn't so anxious to put a team in LA if it means they have to pay for it. They previously thought it was a good idea until they realized how much it would cost.

No worries about the Cardinals ever moving to Los Angeles. Although I'd sure save a ton of money on gas and motels.

I'd say the Jags end up in San Antonio and the Rams move back to LA.

I always thought the NFL would try to hit the bigger markets, which San Antonio may not be. It's too bad they want LA so much, I would think they would try to get another Midwest team too.

Stl. replaced their turf last year and as long as they keep the stadium in the top 5, they can't leave the contract. I don't think Georgia's kids have the money to pay for a stadium in L.A. anyway. If Carroll Rosenbloom had lived, he would have built his own stadium in LA and they never would have moved. Jack Kent Cooke left the stupid Coliseum Commission and built the old Forum. Guys with big money in the big markets can do that. The Rams aren't owned by just one billionaire. And as I stated, the NFL wants in the L.A. market, but not at their expense.

IF the NFL paid for the stadium in L.A., and you were an owner in any other city, in need of a new place to play, wouldn't you be telling the NFL they had to pay for it?

I don't think I'm going to live long enough to see an NFL team in Los Angeles area.

Jags in LA ..??

I am all for it .. any team in LA is good IMO .. natural rivalry for us so we can get them in our division and get rid of the Rams.
