Patriots' Green-Ellis fined $5,000 for Rams hit

New England may not have been penalized in last week's 23-16 victory over the Rams. But one of their players was fined for a late hit in the game at Gillette Stadium.

Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis was fined $5,000 for unecessary roughness, according to the NFL. Although there was no penalty called on the play, during its normal review of game tape the league determined that Green-Ellis did in fact strike Rams cornerback Fakhir Brown late and out of bounds at the end of Brown's interception return in the the third quarter.

There were no fines, however, for what appeared to be a late hit by New England defensive tackle Richard Seymour on Rams quarterback Marc Bulger. Or for an apparent facemask grab by New England linebacker Adalius Thomas on Bulger.

Rams coach Jim Haslett sent several plays in for review by the league's officiating department after a game in which the Rams were penalized nine times for 63 yards, but the Patriots were not penalized once _ the first time that has happened in Patriots franchise history.

The fines are all bullish. Wolfork of NE was fined 50k (or was it 35k) but the NFL also said the hit showed no ill intent. I don't put too much stock into the fines as they seem more like the NFL is just trying to gather money rather than truely discipline plays that deserve to be disciplined...

How can the refs. get away with not calling any penalties? I didn't see the game, so I can't comment on whether the players deserved the fines.., but I do find it strange, the refs. didn't call any penalties at all, not one, against NE. That's some strange stuff...

They did actually "call" one, but it was declined by the Rams, so it doesn't count.

That's why the Rams sent the game tape to the officiating committee for review. How can only one team commit penalties?

Are you saying they only called one penalty throughout the whole game..., which sheds a whole new light on it. Rams boards said there were 6 or so, called against the Rams, and none on NE. Either way.. it's crazy!! I mean, what are the refs. getting payed for.., if they're not going to make the calls? How many here, wish they had a job like that? :)
