This thread is where all us golf fanatics can talk about the wonderful game of golf. Talk about favorite courses, talk about your rounds, clubs, etc.
I'm currently watching the Buick, seeing Phil completely shoot himself in the foot. He was at -10, then proceeded to bogey three straight holes ot all but eliminate himself from contention.

Great thread!!!!
Just wanted to mention that for years I was a HORRIBLE putter then i switched to a long putter (the real long broom stick kind) and wow did it help me. Id recommend it to anyone that has trouble with short putts. It makes everything really still and solid.

Glad to see you started this thread Fantasy! Particularly this year being a Ryder Cup year, with Scottsdale's own Tom Lehman as Captain for the U.S. squad... should be alot of fun!!
As for favorite courses - well, I have been fortunate to have played at some incredible places across the country... Mainly due to work!
Some of my favorites are:
- The courses in Kohler, WI: Whistling Straits, Blackwolf Run (River Course)
- Pebble Beach
- Spy Glass
- Stonewall Orchard (Grayslake, IL)
- Stanwich Club (Greenwich, CT)
- Westchester Country Club (White Plains, NY) home of the PGA's Westchester Buick Classic
- TPC River Highlands (Cromwell, CT) Home of the PGA's Greater Hartford Open
- TPC Sawgrass ( Ponte Vedra, FL) Home of the PGA's Players Championship
- TPC @ Avenel (Bethesda, MD) Home of the PGA's Booze-Allen Classic
- Seaview (Atlantic City, NJ) Both the Bay and the Pines courses
- Blue Herron Pines (Cologne, NJ)
- Las Vegas Paiute
- Talking Rock Ranch (Prescott, AZ)
- Silverleaf GC (Scottsdale)
- DC Ranch (Scottsdale)
- TPC Scottsdale
- WeKoPa (Ft. McDowell)
- Anthem, both courses (Anthem, AZ)
- Estrella Mountain Ranch (Goodyear, AZ)
- Mirabel GC (Scottsdale, AZ)
- Ancala GC (Scottsdale, AZ)
- Talking Stick - prefer the South Course (Scottsdale)
And many more...
I play with a a 6 year old set of Titleist 990's. A Titleist 983K 9.5 degree driver, a Calaway 5-Wood, Cleveland wedges - Sand, Gap(54-degree), & Lob (60-degree). I have used a Scotty Cameron Newport Putter for over 10 years now, and will never change... I need to pick up a 3-Wood. I usually try to stick with the Titleist ProVI ball, however, cost is certainly an issue.
All of that might make you believe I am a pretty darn good player... wrong! My handicap is typically between 11 to 13. I have shot 80 twice, but never broker through. Never even broke 40 for 9 holes... But I LOVE the game and hope to be playing for another 30 years!!!!
More importantly, my 9 year old son loves the game as well, and has just gotten to the point where we can walk 9 holes with him play his ball from the ladies tees... That is some of the best fun I have ever had on a golf course!

I have a set of Callaway warbird irons, i just bought them used a few months ago, they are about 3 years old i think. I have Nicklaus woods, and Adams Wedges. I have a Taylor Made R7 driver and an Odyssey 2-ball Putter.
I need to buy some new fairway woods and wedges. I had a set of Nicklaus irons i got from Costco, they didnt even last me 6 months. (This may be partially due to me hitting them up against trees, smashing my bag, etc:wink: )
Before this minor setback, i was about a 15 handicap i'd say. I am a classic streaky player. I have shot an even par 36 before, then that same week i shot a 48. I shot a 29 (even par) at an executive course in New Mexico over Xmas Break. I've shot in the 70s twice, except both of those were at the Links at QC, which is par 70 and is the easiest course you'll ever play.
Irons have always been the best part of my game. My driver is pretty terrible (i suffer from a slice). My short game is mediocre at best. My putting is very shaky. I recently switched to "the Claw" grip DiMarco uses, but after my last lesson i abandoned that and have a new grip and posture while putting.
The nicest course i've ever played is Paako-Ridge in Sandia Park, New Mexico (about 15 minutes east of albuquerque). It was at one time rated the number one affordable public course in america.
My "home course" is Toka Sticks on Power/Williams Field. Its not great, but i play for free since i'm on the golf team.

Some of you guys may have already seen this, but thought it was funny nonetheless...
Thirty-Two Absolute Truths of Golf
1. If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age.
2. The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.
3. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.
4. When you look up and cause an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.
5. Any change works for a maximum of three holes and a minimum of not at all.
6. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse.
7. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.
8. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.
9. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.
10. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.
11. The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all your errors.
12. If it ain't broke, try changing your grip.
13. Golfers who claim they don't cheat, also lie.
14. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.
15. A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent's luck.
16. It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you are lying 10.
17. Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.
18. Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.
19. It's not a gimme if you're still away.
20. The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree.
21. There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces, and bounces just the way you meant to play it.
22. You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10% of the time, and a 2-inch branch 90% of the time.
23. Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.
24. If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.
25. To calculate the speed of a player's downswing, multiply the speed of his back swing by his handicap. Example: back swing 30 mph x handicap 20 = downswing 600 mph.
26. There are two things you can learn by stopping your back swing at the top and checking the position of your hands: a) how many hands you have, and b) which one is wearing the glove.
27. Hazards attract; fairways repel.
28. You can put "draw" on the ball, you can put "fade" on the ball, but no golfer can put "straight" on the ball.
29. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.
30. If there is a ball in the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker.
31. If both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint.
32. Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it.

Am I sick or what? I'll be out of town this weekend, so I went to the FBR on Monday. It was actually pretty cool. I got to watch how some guys practice, walked around and heard every word of their conversations with their caddies, and actually watched some of the caddies walk the course and pace off yardages. No golfer, just the caddy. That was very cool. Those guys work their tails off. When you see them on Sunday, consulting their books, that's the result of their work from Monday. I left about noon and played Talking Stick North. A day just doesn't get much better than that!

FB, I'll be at the open on Friday, and will definitely be scoping the Phil/Vijay group... I really don't like Singh at all and would love to see Phil put a whuupin on him! David Duval is playing as well which surprised me! WOuld love to see him do well. And of course, my church mate and fellow North Scottsdale resident, Tom Lehman will be out there!!! They all got old people driving, with these big black sunglasses that you can use to stare at the sun from mercury! Yesterday I saw one come to a complete stop in the fast lane, while completely ignoring the U-turn lane, and sat still with its blinker on. No traffic light there, no road to turn left onto. This BUICK stopped traffic in the fast lane to make a U TURN!
I don't need to see any more Buick's. LOL.

WOW. What a day today was.
I got there about 10 o'clock and went and signed in at the volunteer desk. I was notified that i'd be a "standard bearer", aka guy who carries the signs. They announced pairings a bit later, and me and my friend were assigned to a group consisting of lucas glover, robert gamez (wildcat), and fan favorite Jason Gore!! There wasnt another group i could think of i'd rather of had (sans Phil). Gore was one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. We carried the signs all 18 right with the group, inside the ropes. I was within feet of them at all times. My group as a whole did quite terribly, +5. Gamez and Gore both missed the cut. At the end of the round, Gore walked right up to us inside the scoring tents and, without us asking, took out two of his used golfballs and signed them for us. He truly was a class act. he thanked us for helping and everything. This was especially surpirsing because he had done so poorly in his round. He truly is a class act... as for Glover and Gamez.... well, what can you expect from a Wildcat? Hed pulled a major choke job to miss the cut.
It was an experience walking onto the 16 teebox. The place is really louder than you think it is. I could not imagine hitting into allt hose people. Even we got heckled for not holding the sign the right way form people on that hole!
I also got a few autographs (Cink, Leonard, Slocum, among others). They gave us a free FBR open sweatshirt and we also got free food and drink. It was a blast.
I'll be out there again tomorrow! Bright and Early- 9 o'clock!:hurray:

Hey FB - sounds like an amazing experience! I'm sure you'll never forget that feeling of being "inside the ropes"!!!
I was there yesterday as well, and man am I feeling it right now!! What a PARTY!!!! We wlked all over the course, but finally landed on #16 and styed for a while! Saw Phil come thru and that was incredible!! The noise around that hole is akin to a football game. I've been to a ton of PGA tournaments, and never have I heard anything close to that! We then sat by the 10th green for the rest of the day... Took in some sun, way too many beers, some of the most BEAUTIFUL women you've ever seen, and some decent approach shots into the 10th as well!!
Stopped by the Birds Nest for a few hours on the way out. That place was insane! I swear it's just a Huge Frat Party fo Adults!!!!!!

Dubai is a big European tournament so I doubt Els and Goosen will play. Tiger has said he plans to play in the FBR eventually but I think he's going to Dubai for the next few years. He may never play in phoenix again. Didn't somebody hit him with an orange? The FedEx cup does not affect the FBR but I wish it would. The FBR suffers from being across from Dubai and the Super Bowl. Imagine the turnout if it weren't! Here's the 2007 FedEx cup schedule. I think three events got moved and some picked up new sponsors.

But even as great as Tiger is - perhaps the greatest ever, can you even begin to imagine what Byron Nelson did on 1945! 11 straight wins! 18 Tournament victories!! They call it the greatest single sporting year ever put together by an individual!! Perhaps Tiger gives it a run this year!!!!

Golf needs to be an olympic sport. If equestrain is an olympic sport, golf sure as **** should be. The PGA tour is one of the most diverse pro sports leagues, with players from around the world. Good players at that! Not to mention all the players on the Euro and Asia Tours. They could have a fourday tournament, just like on the PGA Tour.

Can someone explain to me why everytime I play golf that the slow players are always ahead of me and the fast players are always behind me??? Doesnt it seem to be the case more often than not??? Drives me crazy......slow play is the only part about golf that I dont like. It takes away from the game so much and theres nothing worse for a round of golf than putting out on a hole and looking up to the next tee and seeing 2 or 3 groups waiting and just knowing its going to be 30 minutes before you get to hit!!!

I freaking hate that too. Me and my buddies played at Canoa Ranch in Green Valley a few weeks back and we had a foursome ahead of us that consisted of 4 senior citizens. The dudes took 4 years to line up their putts. On one par 5.... downhill dogleg left....I pulled out the big dog (a new driver I just bought) ..... I flew those biatches and rolled it way beyond them. I figured that would speed up there play. :lollollol:

I fully endorse the Cleveland Launcher Comp Driver. I just switched from an ancient Titlest Driver (starship series :lollollol: ) and the increase in distance is rediculous. When you hit the sweetspot it is like hitting a freaking tennis ball it just explodes off the face. I guess thats what 10 years of technology will do for you. I play a 9.5 with stiff flex.

:lollollol:
Thats one way to speed up play! Tempting idea!!!

How big is the club head? Im still using an older Ping Tisi driver that I like but might be in the market for a new one. Ive heard a lot of good players are going from 8 and 9 degree lofts to 9.5 and 10 to get the ball up better. What do you think???

I wouldnt go any further than 9.5 degree. I have a 10.5 and I hit it too high, making it go shorter.

I just switched from the Titelist 975D 9.5 to the Ping G5 10.5. WOW! It's consistent long with nary a waver in direction (except for the occasional block wide right..)

The club head is important for sure. And with todays technology, there is no reason to not be using a new model with a big head. I use a 2 year old Titleist 983k, 9.5 degree...
BUT, the shaft is more important than the head!!! You should really have a pro take a peak at your swing and suggest the proper shaft... I was using a regular flex graphite shaft forever, and constantly fighting a hook... I broke down one day and had a pro measure my swing, and he suggested a stiffer graphite shaft. WOW!!! It was like magic!!!

Regarding the right club selection....there are really about 5 or 6 major considerations. (shaft type, shaft stiffness, club head size, club head loft, playability, consistency, and overall price).
I wouldn't focus too much on the club head size. I thought that it would be a major thing switching from a 250cc driver to a 460cc and it really isn't that big of a deal. You just need to tee up these newer drivers really high and just swing like you normally do - The club and the ball will do the rest.
Like FB was saying don't go any lower than a 9.5. You would have to have a swing speed like TW to pull off a 8.0 degree driver (i.e. 120mph) and that is pretty difficult to pull off.
Another huge consideration is shaft type. Alot of good amateurs and obviously pros are switching to unique shafts. Some of them have specifically designed bend/kick points and they can dramatically effect your ball trajectory, speed, and flight (i.e. Aldila shafts). Like 82Cards was saying have your swing speed measured. I consistently swing around 100-110 mph and that requires a stiffer shaft. I would slice everything I hit with a regular flex.
I demo'ed 5 drivers before I bought the Cleveland.
1. Ping G5 2. Cobra M, X Type 3. Callaway Fusion 4. Nike Sasquatch 5. Cleveland Launcher Comp
The best two of what I tried above were the Ping and the Cleveland. I was really impressed with the stock Fujikura shaft from Cleveland, and I really was happy with the was the club head looked at address (all black). The ping performed very similarly but I didn't feel as though I was getting as good of contact with the Ping or getting the same distance.
Good Luck looking for that next driver. It DOES make a world of difference. I am going golfing tomorrow.

Heard on "Backspin the Golf Show" today that we are getting closer and closer to a toned down golf ball to keep the game from becoming a "bomb a driver anywhere and hit wedge into the green" scenario. I for one, favor it. If you look at Doral, it used to be the Blue Monster, now its nothing for these guys to just tear it up, which wasnt the original intent. I think it would be a lot easier to tone down the golf ball than to try to make the courses even tougher. Less money too!!! A golf ball is cheaper than real estate!!!

Tiger is simply amazing... end of story... There are a few other players now who possess Tiger's physical skills, but NOBODY has it between their ears like Tiger does!!!!! When he has to make a shot, or a putt, he simply gets it done. I would be shocked to see him blow the lead tomorrow...
Villegas is a stud! He's young and made some mistakes today, missed a few makeable putts, but boy is he going to be a star!
Did you guys see what happened to Phil on the 10th hole? His drive hit a fan and broke his watch, so Phil coughs up two 100 dollar bills for the dude! Too funny...

I agree that Tiger is mentally the most complete golfer we have ever witnessed. Nothing really screws the guy up. He is also built like a cornerback and lifts weights relentlessly and that gives him a competitive advantage IMO.
Regarding Villegas...I cannot believe he got a double bogey on the 18th. I don't think he is out of it - but that sure doesn't give him any confidence going into Sunday. He is going to have to shoot a low number to have a chance.

Hey guys.. Had a terrific week this week at the LPGA Safeway International out at Superstition Mountain! Through a supplier of mine who is associated with the LPGA, I was offered the chance to put a 4-some together to play in the Pro-Am event this past Monday and Tuesday. All I can say is WOW!
It's a 2-day event, with one day being an Am-Am and the 2nd day being the Pro-Am where you get partnered up with a Pro. Our Pro was a young Korean stud named Young Kim. She was fantastic and her caddie was a blast!!! We had so much fun. And, to boot, we came in 5th place out of 80 teams!! The tournament pays the top 5 finishers so we won a new set of Ping Wedges!!
The event is simply amazing... As a participant, you get SOOOOOO much stuff!! They gave us a $700 credit to spend on Ping Equipment, Trek Bikes and Swiss Army Watches and other gadgets... They also gave us the chance to pick out some awesome Oakley sun-glasses!!!
It was amazing. Sitting next to Christi Kerr, Julie Inkster, Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel, Paula Creamer and the rest... They gave us breakfast, lunch both days, and a kick-azzzz dinner party Tueday night! The girls are so dammm cool! They are so willing to talk with you and don't mind being engaged at all. It was fun to see them let their hair down when the camera's are off...
And for me, I always feel like I can learn more about the golf swing from the girls versus the guys... They are so much slower and more rhythmic... But can still pound it!
The Pro-Am package also came with Weekly Passes to the actual tournament, so I took my wife and kids out there yesterday. Followed Annika for a while - who played extremely poorly. And then caught up with Young Kim - who also played poorly... The WIND was brutal yesterday...
Anyway, if you ever get the chance to head out to Superstition Mountain - DO IT!!! It is truly a beautiful place...

What NO Golf Reports? C'mon FantasyBaller you are slacking. Phil Mickelson won the Masters and it is his second major in a row as only 8 others have won 2 in a row. Will he make it 3? Amazingly enough everyone use to say that Mickelson is a choker and could never win the big ones. I use to be in that category but to seeing him win 2 Masters in 2 years as Tiger won it last year is amazing. He has now won 3 majors in his last 9 tries while he went 30+ without winning one.

I feel your pain. Ive been playing for 39 years and I still cant putt. Seems like the less i worry about it the better i putt though. So much of it is confidence. Now, i just get up there, try to relax and just take it back and follow thru. I think thats why kids putt so well. They just get up there and putt, no thinking, no worrying no nothing!
Of course i dont practice putting either. If I do have time to practice its mostly with the driver which is NOT the best way to practice. (so why do I do it then?:banghead: ).
I had a great golf teacher tell me once, when you practice its:
1/3 of your time on the range
1/3 of your time chipping
1/3 of your time putting
So, if you have an hour and a half, it should be 30 minutes each. With me its more like 90% on the range and 5% chipping, 5% putting. No wonder my short game sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

Given that the US Open starts on Thursday, thought this was an appropriate article to post... Sunday is Fathers Day. I can't even imagine the emotions Tiger will be feeling if he's lucky enough to be in contention on Sunday. And as you'll see, even Tiger has issues with putting at times....
Wounded Tiger
Woods Trying To Bounce Back From Dad’s Death, Long Layoff
Mamaroneck, N.Y. – Since winning his last U.S. Amateur and turning professional in the fall of 1996, Tiger Woods has played in 37 major championships.
He has won 10 of those 37 for a sterling 27 percent success rate. Maybe more impressive is that he has 20 top-10 finishes. Want more? In his last five majors he has won twice (2005 Masters and British Open), placed second in last year’s U.S. Open, tied for third at this year’s Masters and tied for fourth in last year’s PGA Championship.
It goes without saying that his resume is impeccable, rivaled only by Jack Nicklaus. So how do you slow down a Tiger like Woods? You can’t really.
Unfortunately for him, Woods got sidetracked by something off the course when he suffered a significant personal tragedy in losing his father Earl Woods to death last month. It has led to his longest layoff in professional golf – nine weeks. He has not hit a shot in a competitive event since the Masters.
"It’s been a very difficult time for our family," said Woods recently on his Web site. "All the support we’ve gotten since my father’s death has made this time so much easier for me, my mom and our family."
Woods turned his attention to this upcoming week.
"I don’t really know what to expect [this] week at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot," he said. "I’ve never had to experience anything in life like this and never had a nine-week layoff before, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully, my game will be sharp. No matter what happens, it won’t be from lack of effort on my part."
There is little doubt Woods will be prepared. When he returned after knee surgery in 2003 he won his first event of his season at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines. Woods admitted then that he wasn’t 100 percent, but the time felt right to come back.
That, of course, was a different circumstance. A physical problem can heal; on an emotional level, there’s no timetable for losing a parent.
"Without a doubt, I’ll be thinking about my dad a lot the next two weeks, especially with Father’s Day coming up," said Woods. "He’s always with me. When I was in high school, he gave me an old gold filling from his teeth that he had flattened out; it kind of looked like a ball marker. It was like a going-away-to-college kind of thing. I never use it, but I always travel with it."
Turning his attention to Winged Foot, Woods has found it diabolically difficult. The world’s No. 1-ranked player for 394 straight weeks in the World Golf Ranking called it "the hardest member’s course I’ve ever seen."
He played a practice round recently.
"The greens are brutal," he said. "They have a lot of undulation and you have to try and keep the ball below the hole. And it’s long. You can hit driver on just about every hole you want. It will be quite a test."
Some of the players in the field this week have only experienced Winged Foot in a major condition. When Davis Love III won the 1997 PGA Championship, Woods finished tied for 29th.
That was 1997. This is 2006, meaning the USGA’s setup will be different from the PGA of America’s test. Woods, like many others, are on guard.
"I can tell you this: the course will play a lot harder than it did for the PGA Championship in 1997," said Woods. "When I played it last week, the greens were slow because of rain, but the course is a lot longer, the rough is deeper and the USGA will put the pins on the edge of the greens."
Woods has been working hard for weeks to get his game in shape, but realistically his game at any time is still better than a majority of the field in any event. The issue becomes: can he overcome those five or so at the top of golf’s elite that no longer seem to wilt when Woods’ name gets plastered on the leaderboard?
Woods may have a secret weapon to help him hold any edges on other contenders. After poor putting performances at times this year, the last coming at the Masters, Woods sent his putter back to Scotty Cameron for an adjustment.
"He restored it to its original state and I’ve been putting great ever since," said Woods. "I just had a bad putting week, but we’re friends again. You’re going to have spells when you don’t putt well. It’s not the putter’s fault; it’s the dude putting it."
So it’s now left up to Woods to figure out how to deal with being idle, having little practice and solving a Winged Foot course he admits is one of the most difficult he has seen while playing with a heavy heart.
"My father is a beauty, as you probably have come to realize," said Woods in 2003. "He's a person I truly love and same with my mother. They have meant everything to me.
"Without their guidance and their support, throughout the years, I would not be where I'm at right now -- there's no way. I have the greatest time talking to them, the greatest time being around them. It's not like we're mother/son or father/son. We didn't have those types of relationships. It seems like we are best friends. I call him up on any subject any time and we can just rap. I think that's the ultimate of how our relationship has transcended over the years."
No doubt the void will be felt this week.

I agree Arby. But Phil has been driving the ball very well this year so he is by far the odds on favorite. I think Furyk will contend as well. The others you mention just can't putt at a level with the real contenders...
Goosen will be there, and since Vijay just won this weekend, you can never count him out.
All that said, I would really love to see Tiger work a mircale and pull this one out... Of course, if he even makes the cut it would be quite an accomplishment...

When I played in college we used to go out and practice after class and wed usually get in about 14 holes before dark. One of my friends who was on the team would hardly ever play with us. He would go to the putting and chipping green and stay there the entire time we were out playing, betting, and having fun. He just practiced his short game.
I guess I dont need to tell you that when it came time to qualify for spots on the team and play in tournaments that he was always the one to beat. He later went on to play in the U.S. Open, contend numerous years for the Nevada State Ameteur Title, Publinx etc. All because he could save shots like crazy.
I wish I had the patience he had and the love to practice the short game, but I just had to be out there trying to bomb the driver and have fun! Oh well.

Arby, what are you actually asking here?? If you are asking who we think will win, I would say the odds of Phil or Vijay are higher than just about anyone else in the field, with the exception of Furyk. Tiger hasn't played in 9 weeks due to the death of his dad. As great as he is, a 9 week layoff that ends with the U.S. Open is just too tough a mountain to climb. Particularly when the Open is being played at Winged Foot. They are saying that they have never seen the rough as deep and thick as it is this year. Winged Foot is the 2nd longest course ever to be played in an Open, and yet is only playing to a par of 70! The greens of course are absolutely brutal. I just don't see how Tiger can come back after 9 weeks and win this tournament...
I believe it will come down to Phil, Furyk, Vijay, Goosen, Tim Clark and possibly Ernie Els...

FB - I only play Pro-V's. Not the "star" balls with red numbers, just the original Pro-V's with the black numbers...
It's more about feeling like I'm using the "right" balls versus the ball actually making a difference however... I'm a 12 handicap and just don't play enough to truly improve (typically twice a month). So in reality, the ball itself really doesn't make any difference...

A name that will be fun to watch is Tadd Fujikara. That is the 15 year old high schooler from Hawaii who qualified earlier this month. He's +7 right now, and still has some holes left. Nevertheless, i'd be hardpressed to break 120 on that course!
82- One of these days i'd like to go to Hot Stix golf fitting and have them fit me for a ball. I'm not sure how much it really helps, but i reckon it wouldnt hurt. My best round was with a Top Flite. I have sucked it up with Prov1x's. I typically just go with whatever i can get cheap at Target!

Speaking of which, what ball do you usually play with?
Started using the Callaway HX Tour 56 and like it a lot. How bout you???
Actually, my bag is full of about every brand imaginable! The older you get the more of a kick you get out of finding balls on the course. I used to make fun of my Dad for doing it and now I do it!! Ha, ha

But you can be sure i pick up every ball i find on the course!

Dont worry, Tiger will make the cut.
Well, thru 12 Tiger is +7! He's gonna have to go nuts the rest of the way today and tomorrow in order to make this cut... I just knew a 9 week layoff, and coming back at this course, in this event could prove to be too much, even for Tiger...

Tiger got one back to finish at +6. 7 strokes off the pace set by Monty at -1. He's gonna have to at least shoot par tomorrow, and more likely one or two under to get in position for the weekend. You gotta believe Monty will shoot over par tomorrow so he'll fall back a bit. But there are a ton of players at even, +1 or +2. Including guys like Phil, Vijay and Furyk!
Tiger hit only 3 fairways today, and took a whopping 33 puts! Man I hope he can get his driver under control. If he can hit some fairways, I like his chances to make the cut. If he only hits 3 or 4 again, we just may not see Tiger on the weekend...

Well, my friend, your guys did quite well considering. I have to take my hat off to your forcasting Tiger to possibly miss the cut. Good handicapping. I thought it would be virtually impossible for that to happen under any circumstances and I still wont truly believe it until it happens.
Our bet looks pretty even right now. I hope we both have a great chance on Sunday and it comes down to the wire!!!

Well, Tiger did miss the cut afterall... Clearly, 9 weeks off from competitive golf, combined with the death of his dad was just too much to overcome at a course like Winged Foot... I honestly don't remember seeing him ever play so poorly... It seems like his intensity, will and desire are all at an alltime low - understandable... He said he will play in the Western Open at Cog Hill, and then of course the British Open and the PGA Championship. But he wouldn't commit to anything more than that... It's almost as if he is just writing off this year... Again, understandable yet so strange nonetheless...
Phil played an incredible back 9 today and will be in the final group tomorrow! I would love to see him win. If he does, we all will be sitting in position to witness the next Jack-Arnie rivalry! I really believe that Phil is truly the only player out there today who can fire up Tiger in a way that would force him to take his game to another level. I know Tiger will be back strong next year. He just needs the healing powers of time...And Phil has clearly found his groove. If he wins, he will have won the last 3 consecutive Majors! With a chance at his own "Mickel-Slam" should he go on to win the Bristish Open. Of course, he would also then have a shot at the true Grand Slam should he win the British and heading into the PGA Championship! Great Stuff!!
I feel for Tiger. Hate to see anyone suffer like that. But, it's a part of life and like we all do, Tiger will come to grips with it and be stronger for it...
Until then - GO PHIL!!!!!! :clapping:

Still can't believe what I saw... Ogilvy played well enough to win, but what in the world was Phil thinking?? He only hit 2 fairways all day, and yet he still went with driver on 18! And then to go on to make double-bogey, when a par would have won and a bogey would have at least forced a playoff... Unbelieveable!!!
This could really do a number on Phil. Had he won, he was on his way towards the Grand Slam, and would have solidified his position as the only true contender to Tiger. Now, who knows... We'll have to see how he bounces back from this... He will be tested emotionally and psychologically like never befoire. He will have to answer for this and it won't be easy. He will have to redeem himself with a win - soon... The British Open is next and Phill will have to play well and perhaps even win to prove his worth...
What a historic collapse...

Callaway HX Tour 56. You can hold off if you want to go double or nothing in the British. We can come up with another great bet im sure. Maybe we can each pick 5 players and whoever has the top finisher in the tournament of the 10 we pick wins. Let me know.

Id say that because of the course that an accurate driver will have a great shot this week. Guys like Jim Furyk, Jeff Maggert, David Toms, Billy Mayfair etc. Should be exciting!
Well, none of my picks won this week, BUT, accuracy DID play a part of it as Tiger could not hit any fairways and left early and Phil's accuracy left him when he needed it most.
More than any other golf tournament it can be said that if you dont hit it straight off the tee, you are probably not going to win the US OPEN.
The Calloway driver may be in the clearance section soon. Sales are bound to drop.

Arby, I actually played golf on Friday in a foursome where one of the players is actually a member at Winged Foot!! No, I don't normally hang with that type of crowd, but a friend of mine has done really well over the years and is a member at DC Ranch up here in Scottsdale... In any event, this guy said that anyone with a 10 handicap would be extremely lucky to break 100 at Winged Foot under normal conditions. Under US Open conditions, it would be impossible for a 10 handicapper to break 110!
The length of the course, the super-tight fairways, the incredibly thick rough, the fast and undulating greens, the DEEP bunkers, the trees, etc... It is one of the top 2 or 3 toughest courses not just in NY, or the northeast, or the USA, but in the WORLD!
I am not a consistent driver of the ball. I can bang it out there on occasion, but if I hit 50% of the fairways in a round, I'm doing pretty well... I just can't control my driver... As you correctly stated, at the US Open and particularly at a place like Winged Foot, if you are in the rough more often than not, you are doomed... That would be me...

Great post!!!
Thats very interesting and I agree.
I played in a US Open Qualifier at Silverado in Napa, CA when I was in college and I remember I was playing fairly well at the time. I shot 82-78 for 160 and the cut to go on to the next round was 147. I remember I was so nervous on the first tee that I popped up my driver and hit it about 125 yards! I then knocked a fairway "wood" (no metals back then!) on the green and made the putt for a birdie!!!
On the very next hole I hit a great drive and mid iron on the green about 10' from the hole so im looking to go 2 under after 2 holes! Well, I left my first putt 9 inches short of the hole and MISSED a 9 inch par putt (I am telling you the truth because after I missed the putt I measured it with my putter so id know how short it was). I mean no one misses a 9" putt but I did!!!!
After that I was so shook up that I went on to shoot 82. On the next 18 (we played 36 in one day) with no pressure because I was out of it, I shot 78. It was an experience I'll never forget and thats when I truly realized that my dream of becoming a pro golfer was just that, A DREAM!!!

A 3-putt for me is already a given, even on any local muni course. At Winged Foot i'd be destined for more than one 5-putt!
I've thought about this question a lot in the past. One of these days when i am old and retired, I would like to take a tour of the US and follow the PGA tour at each of its stops. I'd go and watch the tournament, then play the course the Monday after. That, or if i'm really well off, buy my way into all the pro-ams!

I went to Sports Authority today and bought a nike CPR hybrid, 18 degree. I havent used a hybrid before and am looking forward to playing with it. My long irons are tough to hit because you have to hit them really flush and when you dont, they arent forgiving. This hybrid should be much more leanient, and i should be able to hit it further than my long irons. I'm hoping it can replace both my 3 iron and my 5 wood. Now i need to go buy some wedges and a 3 wood and i'll be set.

Good luck with the hybrid FB... I recently won a Ping G5 Hybrid - 19 degree. And since I never hit my 4 iron all that consistently, I decided to put it in the bag.
I have been using it now for about 4 months, with mixed reviews... There is no doubt it is much more forgiving than the actual 4 iron. But for some wierd reason that only the golf gods know, I can't hit the damm thing with any loft... Oddly, I tend to hit very hard, low shots with a biting draw... It's not the worst problem I guess as there are plenty of times where that shot comes in handy. However, on certain Par 3's where I use it off the tee, I want to hit a high, soft 205 yard shot that will hold the green. I have yet to find that shot with this hybrid...

Yeah i'll just have to wait and see. I got it for $90 so it wasnt too big of an investment. My friend has one and he likes it. I just need something to make the 200+ yarder more consistent for me and also another option off the tee, especially with the long par 3's.

I think youre going to like it! I know that the Senior Tour Players almost to a man have them in their bags and more and more regular tour players are starting to use them. I have a Ping HL 3 iron in my bag and really like it. Its a lot easier to hit than my regular 3 iron was.
About 3 or 4 years ago I took my 1 and 2 iron out of my bag and replaced them with a 5 wood and the 3HL.

Ditto Arby... I'll never understand how anyone can rip a 14, 15 or 16 year old for doing things nobody in her sport has ever done. Has she actually won? No... but how many 14, 15 or 16 year old have won?? She will get her share of W's - that is a given. I would love to see it happen this weekend. But, they are playing 36 on Sunday. And it's really hard to imagine that a 16 year old will be able to hold up to both the physical and mental demands of playing 36 on Sunday in the biggest tournament of the year! Would love to see it, but it would take an amazing effort for sure. I would say that if Annika can remain sharp, and keep her putting in check, she'll come away with the W.

Great post! Excellent points!
I think Michelle has a shot to win, but shes going to have to FINISH and she hasnt been able to do that yet. She will have to putt well which has been her downfall at times in her very young career.
I think physically she could hold up because shes in great shape, and at some point she will break thru in one of these, but you are right she is just a 16 year old and what she has done to this point is amazing to say the least.
Annika has to be the favorite but I believe as great as she is, shes only won 2 US Opens and has had a sub par year for her. She is not putting as well as she used to, shes not driving the ball as straight as she was last year and shes had to cope with lots of emotional turmoil this year.
With all that said, Im rooting for Michelle, but Id have to say Annika is the safe pick.

Sticking with the trend of blowing my hard-earned money on golf clubs, i just purchased a new r580xd taylor made driver and an r580xd taylor made 3 wood. Combined they cost me about 230, but i was able to fanagle a deal with my dad in which he will pay 100 of that. I got them online at golfsmith; today was the last day of their big sales event and i got them 20% off and free shipping.
I did need a 3 wood, my old one was a piece of crap, and 3 woods can be used in a variety of different situations.
I do have a Taylormade r7 quad driver that i got for Xmas. Its nice, i'll keep it for sure, but the head is somewhat small and i could use some extra distance. My dad has the same driver i bought (lefty though, dangit) and he can absolutely crush the ball with it. So we'll see!
They should ship it Monday, so im hoping to get it sometime next week. It was kind of a splurge by, but it will help my game no doubt and i feel it was a good deal. I think im done for the time being with clubs, although i could use some new wedges. They have some Wilson Staff ones on sale, perhaps i'll check those out too!

Well Arby - Michelle played extremely well all day today, and hung in there 'til the end. For a 16 year old, she's nothing short of amazing... Her putting was good enough to win today. She just missed a few short, 130 yard punch shots. Had she nailed those shots, she would have won today. Johnny Miller said she needs to place the ball further back in her stance when she attempts those knock down shots... But for sure, her day is not that far off...
Annika showed why she is still the best Lady golfer in the world. She goes double, bogey, bogey to finish the front nine, and then grabbed 3 birdies on the back to get into a tie and force the 18 hole playoff tomorrow. I really don't see Pat Hurst ho,ding up to the pressure of a playoff, on that course, against the #1 women golfer in the world! Annika last won the US Open 10 years ago, so it would be a terrific story to see her finally get back to the winners circle in an Open... Should be fun!

Good post again 82. I played Dobson Ranch today so I didnt get a chance to watch the tournament. I tried to keep up on my cell phone, but kinda hard in between shots. I did see Annika's putt on 18 on replay. Wow! that was exciting. I never thought Id enjoy watching the ladies more than the men, but I recorded the ladies this week and not the guys!!!
Oh, by the way, I hadnt played Dobson in years and I used to shoot in the high 70s there. Today I shot 85 and actually hit the ball well off the tee. My short game has got to be the worst in Arizona! Numerous 3 putts, flubbed chips and horrible lag putts. What does it feel like to actually get up and down? I sure wouldnt know!!!

Sounds like you got a good deal FB. Let us know how you like your Taylor Mades. Ive got to get a couple of hybrids because I was having a lot of trouble today with my long irons. I used to hit them fairly well, but lately have had trouble hitting them solid. Not swinging real well right now, but the good thing about being older is that Ive got about 200 swings stored up in my memory bank and I can always hit the range and see if I can get one of them to work. Looks like a trip to Fiddlesticks is in order!!!

As I thought she would, Annika prevailed... In fact, it wasn't even close as starting on the very frist hole when Annika birdied and Pat Hurst bogied, it was never in doubt... Good to see Annika grab the Major after a 10 year drought! She now has 10 Majors as does Tiger. Wonder who will have more by the time they're done??? You might be inclined to say Tiger, but I actually believe Annika will beat Tiger in Majors when it's all said and done...
I have never played Dobson... but I can totally relate to the short game woes... I am playing Tatum Ranch tomorrow, up in Cave Creek. Haven't played in 3 weeks so as always, whichever way the ball goes will be a total mystery!!!

Recommendation #1 = play earlier in the day; recommendation #2 = use an Allstar Fownes golf glove if you can find one. My grips are Golf Pride Tour Wrap and I re-grip my set every 1-2 years. My best gloves ever were Allstar Fownes. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find them in the past 18 months or so. allstarfownes.com results in bogus links. If you have any success in finding them, please let me know.

Thanks for the recommendation on the gloves. I'll look for them right now!
I should probably look into getting my clubs regripped as well. They are Callaway Winn grips but even in normal conditions they feel slippery. I have a couple PING irons just lying aorund that have Golf Pride Grips and they feel very nice.
Im gona head to the range tonight and try to work some things out. If i can hit my driver well, i can shoot low 80s, possibly dip into the 70s. If my driver is off, it can get ugly.

went to Fiddlesticks tonight and got back on track by concentrating on staying connected thruout the swing. I have a tendency to lead too much with my body on my downswing and this causes a "flayling" with my arms which can make you come over the top and screws up timing.
Also, I tried really hard to not jerk the club so far inside and "set" it more outside and away from my body on the backswing. This along with a fuller turn really helped. Cant wait to get out on the course and see how it works on the links!!!

Just heard on Paul Harvey that the USGA is seeking a new spec for golf balls. Ones that will travel 15-20% less than the current legal ball. Sounds like a good idea to me considering that courses are becoming obsolete to a lot of the players because technology is outdistancing (no pun intended) available real estate and courses' ability to change length, toughness etc.

Considering the price, it's a very nice track indeed Arby! Tatum is private now and I joined a few years ago, Has to be the best value in the Valley. Brand new club house. New tif-eagle greens 2 years ago. And I have to say, the course is in terrific condition given the time of year...
Shot an 86 today with 2 birdies and 2 double-bogeys... My issue is that I just don't hit enough greens. I think I hit 5 greens all day today. My chipping is in pretty good shape so if the lie is decent, I can typically stand a better than 50% chance of getting up & down...
Tatum is a really tough track. Very narrow so if you miss a fairway, you're hitting from behind a tree of cactus, from dirt - if you can find your ball...
We play it at 6,700 yards. So there are some very challenging par 4's and two par 5's well over 550 yards.
Of course, it always seems the wind is in your face on the longest holes!
In any event, it's always a good day out on the course... Looking forward to getting out there again real soon!

But congrats on making that. Its a very prestigious event. And Rancho Santa fe is one of the nicest places ive ever been too.
Today i played Bear Creek and played probably the best 18 hole round ive ever played. I shot 82, with 10 bogeys and 8 pars. Nothing worse than a bogey for the first time ever, which means i was consistent. I dont even recall having a bogey putt from more than 3 or 4 feet. If i just hit a few more greens and sink a couple more mid- distance putts, i'll drop down into the 70s.

Im 51 and I can shoot my age!!!!! (too bad its for 9 holes:oops: )
Im probably a 10 handicap right now, but I hope to get my game in shape. My problem, like so many of us, is that I just dont get to practice. Also, Ive been playing exec courses with one of my daughters on Sundays so I dont get to hit all the clubs in my bag and dont get a chance to hit shots on really challenging holes. I'll tell you, it really showed when I played Dobson which is not a tough track comparitively speaking. I had a real tough time with the large sloping greens and had to hit some long irons and fairway woods that I hadnt hit in a while!
But with all that, my love for the game is such that I enjoy playing any course in the valley and because im so inconsistant, I never know whats going to happen! Looking forward to working on my game a little and trying to get the ol handicap back to single digits again.
Hope we can all get together in the future. Playing golf, talking sports and rehashing the Cards' games!!! Sounds perfect! :toot:

Actually, If (and thats a big if!) I get lucky and win the British, you can buy mine on ebay for cheap. I buy my Pro V1xs on ebay for about 70cents per ball. Well, Michelle had a tough first day and played herself right out of a chance to make the cut... 4 penalty strokes and a 77 first round score at an event like the John Deer just won't get it done!
The analysts who covered her round actually said she played with a ton of guts, and that for many others, her round could have easily been in the 80's!
In any event, with the leaders down at 64, it looks like I was too high with my guess at the cut line! It will probably end up at 131 or 132 at the highest. Amazing...

Checked out the We-Ko-Pa course on the web: looks like a good course for the money! The wife and I play best ball on Sunday mornings at Chandler's Bear Creek Cub Exec course. We suck - our best is around 65 on a par 59; 70 or less is good. For the money, the course is great, especially this time of year - $25 for both of us with a cart. When Bear Creek shuts down in spring and fall, we head elsewhere (usually Cypress to play the short 9 twice = more cheap golf); but, we may give We-Ko-Pa a shot. Glad you enjoyed the cart girls.

Can anybody please explain to me, why , as a 16 year old with a driver's liscense, I can drive any car anywhere i'd like, but i cannot drive a golf cart at some golf courses? I had a tee time at ViewPoint golf course in east mesa today, arrived, paid, and was heading out the door when the fateful "Hey fellas, how old are you?" came out. Upon hearing 16, we were told we had to walk. I was not about to pay any money to walk so right in front of this guy i called up Arizona Golf resort, made a tee time, and demanded a refund. Its just ridiculous to force kids who have a valid drivers liscense to have to walk.
BTW- arizona golf resort was in pretty bad shape!

Next week or the week after i'm playing both TPC courses, and i also have a gift certificate at Talking Stick i need to redeem. Should be fun!....if i can remember how to swing a **** club.
That's just plain STUPID FB... Never knew that happened...
Hey, a friend of mine is a member of Pine Canyon up in Flagstaff and I got to play to today with him! Holy ******* cow! What a tremendous course! What a development!!! It was awesome... We played it at 6,400 yards and I shot an 83 with two birdies... Not too bad for not having played the course before. I hope I get a repeat visit - it was outrageous!!!

Wow, just got done listening to the Bunker to Bunker Golf Show and Ive never heard anyone get trashed the way Michelle Wie did by Greg Ellis and Tiffany Nelson. They absolutely lambasted her. Laughing at her, making fun of her, pretending to throw up on the air, talking about how big of a farse she is, demeaning her etc. They just relished in it. Ive never heard anyone hammered like that, not even Barry Bonds.
I cant wait for the day she wins and I will be the first one tuned in to listen to what they have to say. You know I was going to put their names down as Greg ElASS and TiFANNY Nelson, but I wont stoop to that level!!! :redtowel:

The wife had a bad back on Sunday so I paid (she normally does) and played both balls - the current cost for two people with a cart on the Cub Exec at Chandler's Bear Creek courses is $32 and change. Sorry if anyone relied on the previously posted info.

Hey FB and 82, whens the British Open draft gonna be??? I can do it tonite at around 8pm. Will that work? I think 82 wants to pick 5 players each and we were saying high finisher gets a sleeve of balls from the other two. If theres a tie (non winner of the tourney) then we have a score card playoff starting on hole one the final day. Hows that sound??? Whats the draft order???

we should have a third party decide the order. as for the time, 8 tonight should be ok.

Thanks, added golfnow.com to my favorites - their short course price is one person walking; interestingly, the long course with a cart is about the same as what we pay for the short course per person once you tack on taxes.

Guys - I'm good for 8:00pm tonite! If you haven't already done so, you might want to go to this site to see a full listing of the field and their start times: http://www.opengolf.com/news/tee_times_official.sps?tour=2006058.
Not sure how we can get a 3rd party to determine the order??
As for the contest itself, I suggest we add up the total scores of our 5 guys and whoevere has the lowest total is the winner. However, I've never done this before so I'm not sure how to deal with the issue of guys not making the cut?? If I have 3 guys not make the cut, and Arby has all 5 of his make the cut, my score will obviously be much lower than his?? How do we account for this??

Well, I was thinking it would be used instead of just the winner. What happens if none of us pick the winner??
FantasyBaller

Its up to you, but i like the idea of just winning for choosing the winner, and if none of us chooses the winner, we can do your idea 82, with possibly like the top 3 scores for each of us.

The easiest way to do this would probably be to just say whomever has the highest finisher wins. If we try to add up all 5 scores the cut screws that up. And if you have to pick the winner, we might have 4 days for nothing. Just my opinion, what ever you guys want to do is fine.
As for draft order im fine with reverse age order:
1. FB
2. 82
3. Arby
second round the opposite
1. Arby
2. 82
3. FB
then the last 3 rounds can go
1. FB
2. 82
3. Arby
thats fine with me.
What do you think?

So for clairification, the person with the highest finisher wins? what about ties (for second, third, etc)

Whomever has the highest finisher wins. If there is a tie we have a scorecard playoff starting with the front nine the last day. Good luck to all!!!!

Not sure what you mean FB?? Whoever picked the player who finishes highest wins. But if there is a tie (say Phil and Tiger come in at the same finish and are higher than anyone else picked), I would say whoever has the next highest finisher... Does that make sense??

Arby, what if we don't have enough players actually playing on the last day??

Just looked up the betting odds for all of our picks:
FB
Lefty 9-1
Scott 25-1
Sergio 25-1
Howell 35-1
Donald 20-1
82
Tiger 9-2
Ernie 14-1
Tim Clark 40-1
Furyk 30-1
Paddy 20-1
Arby
VJ 14-1
Montie 35-1
Goose 18-1
Clarke 30-1
Appleby 30-1
So, if you add up all of the odds they look like this:
FB 114
82 108.5
Arby 127
That means that according to the oddsmakers the best team on paper is 82 followed by FB and me, Arby, bringing up the rear!!! :banghead:

Its just the high player. Not a team bet. Of the 15 guys we drafted whomever owns the highest individual finsher wins. The only way we'll have a problem is if all 15 miss the cut and if that happens I'll buy both of you a set of clubs!!!!!!

i dont think we should have too big of a problem. Unless we have another todd hamilton/ben curtis, somebody we picked is gona win.
Arby Rick
07-17-2006, 10:04 PM
Just to clarify. Whomever owns the highest finisher of the 15 we drafted wins. Example......Peter Lonard wins the British Open and Phil comes in 2nd, FB wins. Example 2...Peter Lonard wins the Open and Phil and Tiger tie for 2nd, then we go to the scorecard playoff starting on the front nine the last day. Say Tiger got a birdie on the first hole and Phil parred, then 82 wins. Make sense???

It's a PLAN!!! Let's go!!!
Arby Rick
07-18-2006, 09:50 AM
Not to try to change things up at the last minute, but I wanted to suggest something here.
In the 70s I was in a fantasy golf league and we used to award points each tournament for players we drafted at the beggining of the year. I was thinking we might want to try it for this because what it does is it allows your entire roster to come into play rather than just one player on that roster. It makes the draft more meaningful and really is more fun.
Heres how it works. The top 24 players when the tournament is over are awarded points. The team with the most points wins. Heres how the points work:
1st 50 pts
2nd 40
3rd 32
4th 25
5th 20
6th 19
7th 18
8th 17...and so on down to 24th place which gets one point.
If two or more players tie for a spot then the points are just divided up.
Example, lets say the tourney ended like this:
1st Woods
2nd tie Phil
Clarke&
Paddy
5th Scott
the points would go 50 to Woods, 32.33 each to Clarke Paddy and Phil (40+32+25=97 divided by 3 = 32.33 and 20 to Scott for 5th.
We had lots of fun with this format because it puts your entire roster into play and adds more skill to the draft than just getting one hot player while the others play bad.
Just a suggestion, let me know if you guys want to do it this way. If not, no big deal at all.
Oh, if there is still a tie then the winner would be the team with the highest finishing player, if there is still a tie then to the best final round, scorecard playoff etc.
Let me know!!!
