Over the course of his career, playing 4 seasons for the Steelers, 1 for the Ravens, and 1 for the Cardinals (+Last week vs. Pitt), these are Brian's compounded preseason statistics:
4 TD's
6 INT's
94/186
944 yds
59.073 Rating
I thought this would provide some valuable insight on Leinart's competition. Granted, he did have 3 amazing preseason games last year for us.

I'm not hanging BSP out to dry yet and obviously the coaches aren't either. Matt had a pretty awful game last year and I didn't think we needed to cut him for it and the same goes for BSP. Who's to say BSP won't play amazing this weekend and Matt plays awful? Whis himself said that BSP didn't have much of a chance and that O.Ross gopt moved over to the left side of the line but was doing what the RT should have done on each play causing the blocking issues we saw. I hope both have success but I don't hold either in high regard and hope the best one wins. Hell.. If Palko is the answer then great. I just want a good backup for Kurt that can also take over if need be (and hopefully is our future as well).

These numbers aren't good.
In fairness, this should be compared to Leinart's preseason stats.
I can't find those, but will look some more.
Meanwhile here are his regular season stats:
14 TD's
17 INT's
289/518
3458 yds
71.7 Rating

I'm interested in Kurt this game because this game will help the most at preparing Kurt for the 1st 1/4 of the season against the AFC south. Leinart has real rookie stats. that are fantastic no matter what talking heads say. BSP was much improved last preseason and made a great showing. what is his preseason stats for last year?

Leinart's preseason stats:
7 TD
4 INT
89/146
1080 yds.
I don't have his rating, but his lowest ever preseason QB rating was 74.4, so it should be higher than that.
Most of Leinart's preseason snaps have been with the 1st or 2nd teams, which can not be said for BSP.
There's nothing wrong with BSP getting a shot at #2. He probably won't win it judging from last week's performance, but at least he can't say he wasn't given a fair shot.

BSP was the highest-rated Cardinals QB last preseason. This is what has led to BSP's shot at #2:
2 TD
0 INT
24/37
233 yds.
100.4 rating

With the given statistics, Leinarts preseason QB rating would be 88.27.

I have always wondered what the math is to finding a QB rating. There have been some ratings over the years that are just skull scratchers.

Well fumbles are not factored into it. Neither are sacks.
But I plug them (TD's, INT's, Yards, Completions, Attempts) into a website that calculates it for you, it has the formula posted and everything.
Really strange and complex.

The thing that is weird to me is why they don't make it add up to 100. For some reason they picked such an obscure number, and it's a decimal??

If anyone likes playing with stat's this site has the QB calculator:
http://www.primecomputing.com/
You can also just do a search for NFL passer rating calculator.
There is no answer as to why a perfect rating is 158.3. What I mean is, the number itself has no significance it's just the highest possible number based on the overly complex formula that was devised years ago.
There have been some more comprehensive formulas devised for QB's and some feel they are more accurate. Troy Aikman used to use his own formula for evaluation QB's and (I think) footballoutsiders has a pretty good one.
The main thing to remember is that it's a "passer" rating and not a "QB" rating.
EDIT: here's the footballoutsiders link:
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb
It's pretty darned comprehensive and they have a book that makes predictions that I'd really like to get to see how accurate it turns out to be. My dang lottery numbers won't come up though.

I would of thought fumbles would have been calculated into that. Sacks I can see why they are not, sometimes a sack is not your fault, but the lines or someones.
