View Full Version : College Football Can Be A Joke Sometimes

Especially the big time schools. Because NCAA Div. 1 football doesn't have a playoff, the early part of the college football season can be a complete joke. Teams load up on creampuffs just to pad their win and point totals to make it look good for the BSCS(not a typo) computer. This week you had such intriguing matchups such as Texas vs. LA-Monroe, Nebraska vs. Florida-Atlantic, Kansas vs. Northern Colorado, and Florida vs. Charleston South. What this does is create very little wiggle room in the rankings. Teams like BYU, Oklahoma State, and Boise won't move up at all even though their out of conference schedule is far tougher than the bigger schools. This is why there needs to be a playoff.

college football not having a playoff system is total bs and drives me crazy every year. EVERY year there is a team that gets screwed.

What makes it worse is that teams get votes based off of reputation. Even the bigger schools play creampuff conference games and might play 3 or 4 really tough teams all year so just in case, they pad their schedule with teams slightly above high school teams. It's ridiculous.

its terrible...
i remember in 02, in the AP miami was #1, oregon was #2, nebraska was #3. colorado killed nebraska in the conf championship, but somehow nebraska was still ranked ahead of oregon in the computer rankings. miami ends up blowing out nebraska in teh national championship, while oregon (while still #2 in the polls, just not computer rankings) had to play colorado in the fiesta bowl and won 34-16. oregon had a shot to beat miami that year.
then of course the undefeated auburn that got left out...that was a joke.
1998 Tulane undefeated team led by shaun king didnt get a shot.
Utah last year, goes unfeated and embarrasses alabama.
even colt brennan's Hawaii team. sure they got blown out by georgia, so everyone thought it was legit that the warriors didnt get to play in the championship game. but WHAT IF HAWAII WON THAT GAME?? i dont think they were among the best 2 teams that year, but you can only beat who you play.
then the infamous "dual champions" of USC and LSU.
teams from the WAC, MWAC, and a few CUSA teams that can contend, dont get the chance too. BCS schools dont want to play them because there is nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing them. i remember hearing fresno st. can never get there home games vs bcs schools because the agree to a home and home series, then after the bcs school plays their home game, the pay the money to cancel the contract before going to fresno st. they mentioned this when they said how wisconsin was the first time in forever a bcs school honored their away game contract...and got smashed.
college football is the only sport on the planet without a playoff system. its a joke. i dont know how some guys sitting in an office can determine whos better by voting based off of who looks good on paper or who has history. makes me furious.

Playoffs!? Don't talk about Playoffs!? We've still gotta get a Championship game... The FBS is just the sport wear portion of the Miss USA pageant... Who votes on a Champion? And how is there a Co-National Champion?
Its ridiculous when a team like UTAH or Boise State plays a schedule with teams like TCU, BYU, in addition to the 1 or 2 BCS schools they play every year only to not be the National Champion? Never plays FCS teams and always ends up beating these so call "BCS Schools" in there house because BCS school are too afraid to play at there venues. Because they usually get WACked. Oklahoma just lost to BYU... Oklahoma could still be the National Champ with one loss while BYU may not get a BCS bid even if they run the table? That truly flawed. At least the old way allowed anyone to be the Champs. Its not even by conference anymore, I guarantee if Duke went undefeated in the ACC they wouldn't get nearly as much consideration as a 1 loss USC or even Miami...
I All the Conferences deserve a BCS bid, I don't care how sorry the top teams in C-USA, MWC, or the other conferences maybe, fair is fair...

I've never understood the objection to a playoff system.
The excuse I always hear is "they'll lose money if they get rid of the bowl games"
YOU DONT HAVE TO GET RID OF THE BOWL GAMES!
Do this, have a 12 or 16 team playoff and you just have the bowl games rescheduled to be the playoff games.
-The first round can be the lower bowl games like the holiday bowl or insight bowl
-Second round would be the next tier of bowls
and so on until the "FINAL FOUR" which would be perfect for the BCS BOWLS aka the Fiesta, Sugar, Orange and Rose bowl.
What's wrong with that, if anything it would peak EVEN MORE interest in the bowl games.
Seriously, who even watches the other NON BCS bowls if their team isn't playing in it? I'm not going to watch Colorado play Oklahoma state in the Insight.com bowl but I'd sure as heck watch the Insight.com bowl if USC was playing Nebraska in the first round of the PLAYOFFS!!!
just my take on the whole thing, I dont get what College football's problem is. You're supposed to represent the COLLEGES of AMERICA, figure it out you owe it to the fans!

Interesting that this was brought up. I dont claim to know alot about College Ball, but i couldnt help feel sorry for San Jose State the other day be completely embarassed by USC.
I understand they are both Pac-10 teams?
However the differences between the two was not even funny. Surely a system should be in place to fix the disparity between a large school with enough funding to buy a 3rd world country and a small school where its hard to get players because you are not the media's jewel.
Also watching that game i heard that SJS had to cut 10 scholarships for this season. Now you tell me how is a team supposed to recruit and compete fairly?

actually SJSU is not a Pac-10 school, theyre in the WAC. but yes, these big time schools, at least for the most part, play a "tune-up" game against schools that stand little to no chance. but those schools pretty much HAVE to take the game, because USC, LSU, or Florida pays them thousands. but its terrible, because the small schools get whacked and the big schools try to run up the score for "bcs purposes"...doesnt exactly promote sportsmanship either. when you have florida, southern miss, arkansas state, air force beating teams by, in some cases, 72 points (Air Force-72, Nicholls St.-0), i dont see how that is good for anyone.

This year the team I feel for is Idaho State.
Game #1: ASU
Game #2: Oklahoma
This is the worst Division II team in the nation, for all intents and purposes, and they're being picked on by fairly major programs.
The out of conference schedules need to be randomized, or something, because what major programs get away with is stupifying.

Strength of schedule should be a major factor. At least USC has a pretty decent schedule as SJCS is their only out of conference creampuff. But Texas has Louisana-Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP, and Central Florida. As things stand right now they have 3 ranked teams on their schedule. Florida, on the other hand just played Charleston-Southern, this week they have NCA powerhouse Troy, and down the stretch when it's time to pad one's win total, they play Florida International. It's a joke.

The BCS keeps me from getting whole hearted into college. I will follow my USC and UofA, but never pay attention to the bcs

Troy has potential ;joker: . they took lsu and florida down to the wire in the past two seasons. theyll likely be a 21+ point underdog though. actually...probably 41 1/2 or so...

Ah thanks for the correction. SJS did play a decent first quarter before the rout was on.

I proposed a different system to someone. Keep the bowl system as is with 64 bowls still being played (much like the NIT in NCAA B-Ball), the exception is that all Conference Champs get an Automatic bid Including 1A indenpendents. And then allow 4 At large bids. Then Use the BCS Bowls as the first round... That's 8 Bowl games. only 16-17 games for the entire season...
