Shell to return to Raiders as head coach

After considering outsiders such as Ken Whisenhunt, Bobby Petrino and Mike Martz, the Raiders went with one of their own and hired Art Shell as their new coach.

Shell will be introduced at 4:30 p.m ET Saturday as the Raiders' new coach. He replaces Norv Turner, who was fired after two seasons and went to the 49ers as offensive coordinator.

In hiring Shell, Raiders boss Al Davis was able to correct a move he said was a mistake more than a decade ago. Davis fired Shell after the 1994 season. Shell, who was 56-41 as the Raiders head coach from 1989 to 1994, will get a chance to right that wrong.

Shell was working for the NFL when he was called by Davis last week to interview for the job. Shell flew to Oakland and interviewed last Thursday. Once Whisenhunt, the Steelers offensive coordinator, decided to stay with the Steelers and informed the Raiders of his intentions Thursday, Davis put in a call to Shell.
I think it's funny that "offensive genius" Martz didn't sign with them. Seeing that they are an offensive team, I guess Oakland is just a horrible place to be now.

Don't be surprised if Shell gets them turned around and they start winning again ....

It's easy to see that this is a pure depseration move. Doubt it'll work out. Coaches coming back in after a long absence tend to have bad seasons to start with, but we'll see in 2 years, if Al Davis can wait that long.

Firing Art Shell was a bad move in the first place and everyone other than Al Davis said so when it happened. Shell was fired after a 9-7 season, not many head coaches get the boot for winning.
Art has not been off for the whole time, he has coached at KC for several years since he left the Raiders.
What you will see now with Shell taking the team back is the swagger will return to the Raiders, they will start to get meaner, a bit tougher, probably more penalties, and they will start to win again. Likely will be the dominant team in the AFC West in three years.
With the exception of Gruden, every time they have gone outside the organization to get a coach it has failed. You have to be a Raider to coach the Raiders.
