cardinals ***Cardinals Vs. Raiders Preseason Game Night Thread***

Hello, Birdgang! Our Arizona Cardinals are back in the West Phoenix Valley for NFL Game Night, as they host their second preseason game, and also first home game in the 2017 season, with the visiting Oakland Raiders for the second straight preseason in Glendale, Arizona. Cardinals begin their 12th year occupying and playing their home games at The University Of Phoenix Stadium, built and made possible by the Bidwill Family and the Arizona Cardinals, and the passing of Proposition 202.

Arizona is playing their second of five scheduled preseason games tonight, after losing to the Dallas Cowboys and seeing Kurt Warner's official induction to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame, by the score of 20-18 in the NFL Hall Of Fame Game at Canton, Ohio on August 3. Meanwhile, heavy metal band Metallica played their mega-concert at the University Of Phoenix Stadium the following night on August 4.

All the Cardinals QB's beginning with Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton playing at least two series of offense in the first half are expected to play tonight, while Blaine Gabbert will continue to compete for the #2 spot, while free agent rookie Trevor Knight continues for the third-string roster spot at QB. The Cardinals rookie draft class, including top draft pick Hassan Reddick and Budda Baker, are expected to receive more playing time and opportunity on the playing field tonight. T. J. Logan though will be out until October at the latest, as he suffered his wrist injury during the Pro Football Hall Of Fame Game.

Cardinals also are beginning their preseason home schedule tonight hosting the Raiders and at the University Of Phoenix Stadium for the second consecutive year. Oakland unfortunately defeated Arizona in their last meeting in Glendale, winning 31-10 one year to the day back on August 12, 2016. Fourth-string running back George Atkinson III scored touchdown runs from 53 and 35 yards, while Matt McGloin 7 of his 11 passes for 71 yards. Third-string QB Matt Barkley also contributed completed 8 of his 24 passes for 121 yards in the Cardinals loss.

Oakland's recent preseason win both ended a four game preseason losing streak, last winning also in Glendale 27-23 in 2007, leads the all-time series with the Cardinals at 8-7 entering tonight, and also visiting Glendale for their fourth game with Arizona, since the University Of Phoenix Stadium in 2006.

Tonight two current Cardinals veterans played previously with the Raiders. QB Carson Palmer was traded to Oakland by the Cincinnati Bengals during the NFL regular season on October 18, 2011, for the Raiders first-round pick on the 2012 draft (Andre Kirkpatrick), and a conditional second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft (Giovani Bernard), while Cardinals offensive tackle Jared Veldheer was drafted by Oakland from Hillsdale College in Michigan in 2010.

Palmer played a total of 25 regular season game with the Raiders during the remainder of the 2011 NFL season with his 4-5 record, but finished with a 4 win, 11 loss record in 2012, after starting and completing 14 games. Former Cardinals QB Matt Leinart was also on the Raiders roster, and Palmer's backup during the Raiders 2012 season. Palmer finished his record as a Raider QB with an 8-15 record in the 2011-2012 NFL seasons.

Raiders eventually traded Palmer to the Cardinals, for Arizona's 2013 sixth-round draft pick from the NFL Draft, and their conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft back on August 2, 2013.

Veldheer played both left and right tackle, and center positions with the Raiders between the 2010-2013 NFL seasons, then signed a 5-year, $35 million free agent contract with the Cardinals back on March 11, 2014.

Both the Cardinals and the Raiders playing their 16th all-time preseason scheduled game tonight, and a win by Arizona would even their preseason record at 8-8.

Cardinals and Raiders preseason game rivalry began , coincidentally, when the then St. Louis Football Cardinals visited the Valley Of The Sun, and defeated Oakland in their first-ever preseason meeting, by the score of 20-9, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, back in August 1976. Arizona and Oakland each had four-game preseason winning streaks during their preseason history. Raiders won four-straight games between 1999 and 2004, and the Cardinals winning four-straight preseason games between 2008 through 2015.

Also in this Cardinals versus Raiders preseaon rivalry after 15 preseason games, Oakland's preseason record is 6-2 on their road games played in Arizona, while the Cardinals road record at Oakland is 5 wins and 2 losses. Oakland has never played a scheduled preseason game while the Cardinals were in St. Louis, Missouri.

Arizona also has a chance later to even their all-time record during the regular season as Oakland also leads the all-time series with 5 wins and 4 losses after nine games. Cardinals won the last meeting at Oakland 24-13, winning their sixth-straight regular season game at the time by the score of 24-13, back on October 19, 2014.

Cardinals radio play-by-play and game analyst broadcasters Dave Pasch and Ron Wolfley are in the television booth announcing the remaining Cardinals scheduled preseason games in 2017, on flagship station KPNX NBC Channel 12 in Mesa/Phoenix, along with KTTU/KMSB FOX Channel 11 in Tucson, and KVVU FOX Channel 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada, joining the Arizona Cardinals Preseason Television Network all games seen live on HD.

KPNX NBC Channel 12 begins their live Pre Game Show beginning tonight at 6:30PM, and KPNX News Anchor Paul Gerke also will join Pasch and Wolfley as the sideline reporter for Cardinals Preseason Games except the Denver game.

NFL Network will replay the Cardinals Vs. Raiders game at least once in the next week before their Preseason Week 2 replay schedule, with tonight's first replay later early Sunday Morning at 1:00AM Mountain and Pacific Standard Time.

Paul Calvisi and former Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry, will also announce the live radio game play-by-play and analysis, along with Azcardinals.com team media reporter and sideline reporter and interviewer Darren Urban, for tonight's Raiders, and later the Bears and Falcons preseasons games with the Cardinals
on flagship station KMVP Arizona Sports 98.7FM, and the Arizona Cardinals Network.

University Of Phoenix Stadium's roof is closed to both keep everyone inside cool and confine the crowd noise during tonight's game with the 72-degree climate-contolled stadium air conditioning, because the local weather forecast outside the stadium area in Glendale for the 7:05PM Mountain and Pacific Standard Time kickoff is mostly cloudy skies at 100 degrees, feels at 104 degrees, along with 15% precipitation, 30% humidity, and west/southwestern winds at 9 miles per hour.

Head referee John Hussey, a sales representative of a logisitics group who graduated from Idaho State, leads officiating crew assigned by the NFL to supervise tonight's Cardinals/Raiders game.

Visitng Raiders are wearing their silver helmets, white jerseys, and silver pants, while the host Cardinals are wearing their tradition white helmets, red jerseys, and white pants.

NO injuries, great luck as both the Cardinals and Raiders players continue to compete on the playing field during the game time, and their coaching staffs continue to evaluate the players during tonight's game action on opposite sidelines, as the players earn themselves in the final 53-man regular season roster during the preseason.

Protect Your Nest, We Do This Together, No Risk It, No Biscuit, Pond The Rock, play hard but safely, beat the Raiders Nation and their fans that are present at the stadium and win your first game in front of your your loyal fans in your 115th consecutive sellout at The University Of Phoenix Stadium, and LET'S...GO...CARDINALS!!!!!

Quote: "Palmer finished his record as a Raider QB with an 8-15 record in the 2011-2012 NFL seasons."

I could have looked it up, but that's a very interesting fact that I was unaware of until now. I wonder, will the Cardinals role the dice on another Heisman wanderlust someday? Bradford in 2018? Winston 2020? Et cetera.
