Default Can We Please Try Starting a Game on Defense?

Starting every week on offense isn't working. Our line is broken as we could use the early field position if our defense could get a quick three and out. We are losing the momentum every week starting the game with this abysmal offense on the field

Good point. Can the D not let teams move the ball so easily on first possesions. Kickoff and half times. We start slow. No passion look lost.

It is a lot easier for opposing play callers to be aggressive calling plays from near the 50 as opposed to near their own 20. Kicking off might not help a thing, but getting the ball first every game hasn't gone well for two years.

It rarely works. I think the stat is about 18% of teams score on the 1st drive of a game. They're playing patty-cake for much of the 1st half anyway trying to figure each other out. Why show anything right away. Our D is the best part of our team. Let THEM make a play or a 3 and out and go from there. Ain't happening tho, BA is stuck in his ways...

Preaching to the choir bro. Ive made several threads about deferring the kickoff and how horrible we are the 1st drive. But of course Super Bruce has absolutely no idea how to change and adapt. Hes is going to elect to receive every time until hes fired

    Selective argumentation.

Week 1- drive ends in an INT, but on Detroit's first play, Bethel returns an INT for a TD.

    Week 2- 3 and out

Week 3- March down field for a TD

Week 4- March down field and Palmer makes bad decision, throwing pick in EZ

    Week 5- 3 and out.

Nothing to suggest Arizona is either abnormally good or bad on opening drives. 2 sustained drives, 2 3 and outs, one drive that resulted in yardage but ultimately a pick.

So, what about the second part of the equation? What have other teams done with second half kickoff?

    Week 1- Punt

    Week 2- Punt

    Week 3- Punt

    Week 4- FG

    Week 5- FG

    This is a non-story.

You know, I have been an advocate of deferring.....and still am. But the second part of your post is very interesting, if not surprising.

I'm still for it as almost every coach is, but that's a reminder its not as clear cut as some/me thinks.

Thanks for your post....will have to think/sleep on that.

What about our D spells 3 and out? After we took the ball on Sunday Philadelphia scored 3 consecutive TD's on 3 drives. The only thing that slowed down their O was they had to wait for our O to get off the field before they could put points on our D.
